TRENDnet SecurView Wireless Internet Surveillance Camera TV-IP110W (Silver)
By
movie.diginfo.tv DigInfo News The SNC series network surveillance cameras, to be released by Sony between june and september 2008, feature a 1.25 megapixel CCD and output a resolution four times that of the previous VGA type cameras. “The monitoring system can output images at 1.25 megapixels on a (charge coupled device) CCD image sensor in a 1280×960 high resolution format.” The system comes equipped with the solid PTZ feature, allowing users to crop and zoom in on areas of interest, this can be combined with an activity detection system which not only detects movement from left to right but can also focus on a car when it detects the alarm has gone off. “The system can be set up to at the entrance of financial institutions and stores to monitor the faces of visitors and customers in a higher resolution or it can even capture same resolution images in a more wide angle shot. Thus it can also be set up to monitor a wide area such as at the parking lot and parks to reduce the number of cameras that need to be set up.” To improve low light sensitivity, the Light Funnel feature uses multiple virtual CCD elements and treats them as one, increasing low light illumination by approximately four times. “Here at Sony, we are looking into expanding our product to develop cameras that can capture images at a higher resolution.” The SNC-CM120, SNC-DM110 and SMC-DM160 will cost between 150000 and 200000 yen.

January 18, 2010 – CBC News Security personnel are installing hundreds of closed circuit surveillance cameras around downtown Vancouver in preparation for the Olympics, but questions remain about whether or not many of the cameras will be removed after the Games. By the time the installations are completed over the next 10 days, an estimated 900 RCMP cameras will be eyeing the crowds around Olympic venues like BC Place Stadium and GM Place. They will be watching for possible criminal activity and medical emergencies. Another 90 cameras are being set up by the city of Vancouver at the two LiveCity party sites at West Georgia and Cambie Streets and David Lam Park, and along the makeshift pedestrian malls on West Georgia, Granville and Robson Streets. The cameras are scheduled to be turned on Feb. 1. The RCMP said its cameras are rented and will be removed after the Games. But the city’s plan for its monitoring equipment has not been finalized. City’s Cameras Could Remain The city has said it plans to deactivate the cameras after the Paralympic Games end March 28, but whether or not they will be removed is not clear. “We need to approach it very cautiously,” Mayor Gregor Robertson told CBC News. “There’s a reason to [use them] for the Games specifically but after that there needs to be a lot more dialogue. People have to understand what the pros and cons are before we move forward on that.” Groups like the BC Civil Liberties Association and the Surveillance Studies Centre …

Review by electronics guy for TRENDnet SecurView Wireless Internet Surveillance Camera TV-IP110W (Silver)
Rating:
I bought this on a Gold Box deal and am very glad I did. First, the image quality is superb. TRENDnet supplies software to assist in setting up the camera but people with a bit of technical experience can go straight to the web interface and set things up there and there are some great features that allow you to set this camera up pretty much however you want.
All of the camera settings are configurable – brightness, contrast, saturation, frame rate, resolution, and even settings to synchronize with 50 or 60 Hz lighting or outdoors. It also supports WPA2 encryption and three levels of password-protected access. You can have it grab images based on movement (requires accessing the camera with Internet Explorer to configure that for some reason) or on a time schedule, and either have it e-mail the images or ftp them somewhere. And it supports dynamic domain name configuration so you can access the camera even if your IP address changes.
It also supports time and date stamping the images – pretty much a necessity – but it also supports accessing an NTP server to make sure the onboard clock is accurate.
And once you get the camera all set up the way you want it, you can save out the configuration file to make it a snap to reconfigure it in case you ever do a hard reset that restores all the defaults.
Not that it will matter to most, but this camera server is actually a full ARM-based computer running Linux. If you go to the TRENDnet website, besides getting the latest firmware, you can also get the source code for the camera OS for those that want to tinker.
The final issue is just the value. You are getting a video camera and a web-serving computer with both wired and wireless interfaces for this price. I’m glad I got mine and am using it to monitor my front porch for visitors and also as a way to monitor the weather at home. With multiple cameras, it’s easy to monitor all sorts of things if someone wants to.

I bought one of these cameras, knowing that it was claimed to be reliant on active-x for the video stream, but my Mac-based application could work around that. My early experiments at setup and use were with Firefox and, as expected, the live video wasn’t available. I went thru the setup and put it online and then went to a different machine using Safari (v3.1) and lo and behold: It streamed the video using an ultracam.jar applet. I troubleshot the Firefox installation and found an incompatibility with /library/internet plug-ins/javaplugincocoa.bundle. Once that plug-in was removed, the video stream worked under Firefox with the same ultracam applet. Also tested successfully with Opera v9.62.
Wireless setup and performance are nominal and straightforward, as are the function with DynDNS and emailed events. One must remember that the default IP address of the camera is probably not in the same non-routable range as most use with their LANs.
Mac users should not fear this camera. Sporting features like the NTP clock & timestamp, DynDNS, and price make it a really nice deal.

If you are going to use this on a remote property or location, here is a lot to help you –
1. Get some cheap sunglasses, break it, and tape one of the lenses over the camera to use it on the outdoors – it is really designed for indoor use & low light – a light sensitive and polarizing filter or sunglass is best –
2. Do call Tech support for help – they are great !
3. You need to know the IP address of your home ROUTER to enable people far away to look at this over the internet – and unfortunately that IP address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (Verizon or Comcast for many of you & me too!) . and … they change that address and give you a new one occasionally. Normally you can get that from the main screen when typing 192.168.1.1 into your browser and an info page will provide you the 4 numbers you need.
4. You also need to make sure that the router has “Port forwarding” enable for port #80. This is a default mode on some routers – not for others. Logging into the router control panel will have a page somewhere that lets you enable this if need be. Ignore this step and test – might just work (mine did!). For multiple cameras they each need to be forwarding on different port #s… 80, 81, 82, 83…. and the router needs to enable all of those ports to be forwarded….
5. Once you know the IP address and enabled port forwarding, call a friend and have them put the IP address into their browser as an address – and add “:80″ (or other numbers for multiple camera situation) into the browser – that should let them see you or your view !! Note that they need to have Java and ActiveX installed and allowed in their browser !!
6. As an example – making up the numbers here – if your router says the IP address is XX.yyy.ZZ.AA then you would put http://xX.yyy.ZZ.AA:80 into the browser – then put in the username and password for the camera – and viola – it works !!
7. Note that if you power down the router, reset it, or if Verizon or Comcast does some maintenance work, the IP address #s change – so you need a way to get that data when needed! (I’m still working on that – it’d be nice if you could get it email’ed on demand from your ISP…..)
Have fun – great camera otherwise (this imnprtant info above was not in the help or Tech doc CD I got with the cmaera!!

Install and set-up went OK, test position close to the WLAN router went OK.
Installed at the intended location the “W” started to act up within a day, unplugging and replugging would get it back to work for a few hours.
Then it quit, won’t even do “W” mode when close to the router. Works just fine when on the wire.
Reading a few of the other “trials and tribulations” I think this one will go back.
Update on the above:
I obtained a RMA from the seller and a replacement (naturally it’s “pay up-front” for that!
), but then decided that there had to be a solution to the WLAN problem.
There sure was: get EVERY ONE of the settings correct and it works. That includes ALL the Wireless settings including the encryption i.e. if the router is set to HEX make sure the cam settings are in HEX too! The other pit fall: correct channel! for some strange reason the channel setting will revert back to the default (6) unless one sets the channel, selects mode as “ad-hoc”, then “apply”. After the “Apply” go back and reset the mode to “Infrastructure”. The channel setting finally stayed!
Next project will be getting the focus as clear as possible for the outside, the reviews keep mentioning the excellent picture quality … not so far!

My first suggestion; leave yourself plenty of time. This will not be accomplished in five minutes. However, I would suspect many of you reading this column are mighty frustrated by now, and are looking to the reviews for assistance. Fact is you will learn more from these reviews than from tech support! Here’s how to set these cameras up (I have four!) TRENDnet Wireless Internet Camera Server (TV-IP110W)
Step 1. Lose the disk and the instruction manual. They are of little use.
Step 2. Enter the [...] website, find your camera in download section.
Step 3. Download and install SecureView and IPSetup.
Step 4. Power up the camera and install the ethernet cable to your router.
Step 5. Load IPSetup and find your camera, double click and enter the setup program.
Step 6. Select static IP and record the camera number, configure your settings.
Step 7. Hint! for email notification, ping your mail server and enter the numeric IP.
Step 8. Hint! select this NTP time server for your camera otherwise the camera will forget the time each time you unplug it. This is a pain to reset! Make sure you enter your correct timezone, e.g. GMT -5:00 for Eastern US Time Zone
Step. 9 Port forward your router using the router setup routine. Just do a google on port forwarding!
Step 10. If port forwarding doesn’t work, select another port, e.g. default port ’80′ did not work for me!
Step 11. Hint! You don’t need SecureView to capture and email images! Just enable motion detect on the setup screen.
Step 12. To make sure you can view cameras from a remote location, use a laptop and connect to an unsecured wireless connection, enter “[...]” and record your IP address. Now enter your IP address e.g. [...] where the numeric string is your IP and :80 is the port you forwarded under steps 10 and 11.
Step 13. Hint! Do not try to view camera images on your desktop and wireless laptop at the same time! You will lose connectivity to your IP Cam! Each Camera must have a unique port!
Step 15: Sit back and enjoy the view!
PS. Trendnet offers Excellent technical support. They are open on New Year’s Day and were extremely polite and helpful.

I have a family member that is disabled and frequently confused. When I am elsewhere in the house this easily allows me to track her presence and know what she is doing. The monitor is easily portable. The battery last close to six hours before I have to recharge it. The cameras are inobtrusive and plugged in. The units are easily programable. I can follow four cameras at the same time. This is what I needed.

Review by David Schwind for SVAT CV0204DVR Web-Ready DVR Security System with 4 High-Resolution Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Surveillance Cameras
Rating:
I recently bought this system and spent yesterday installing and tinkering with it. I am quite happy with it! Here are my thoughts: Everything that came in the box was as expected, save that the DVR didn’t have an S-video output as I had seen it with before (I believe I bought an “upgraded” one which didn’t have the output). I was initially disappointed, but later found that the regular video-only composite output worked fine for me. That was my only disappointment with the system, and it has turned out to be a non-issue. One of the big things I was looking for was ensuring that each camera didn’t require a local power source, as I didn’t relish the idea of running receptacles to each camera location. This one has a single cable with an S-video connector that runs to each camera and carries both power AND video signal, so that worked out great. Installation was a breeze (despite spending a day in my attic) and the components worked together the first time I put the system together. Bringing the picture up through the web was also a snap as well – the instructions in the user guide are quite good for what you need to do. One of the biggest complaints about this system (and really all others in the sub-$1000 price range) that I had read before buying it is the lack of night vision clarity. I don’t know what people are talking about with this particular system because I was impressed with the picture I got from the night vision from the cameras – out to about 20 feet away from the camera in a completely dark inside room and with some lights (like indirect lighting through windows) my outdoor cameras were able to have a complete field of view. As far as installation, I am not a techie, but installing it was very straightforward and made sense. It went together quickly and though it took me a day to install, the majority of that time was spent running cables through walls and through ceilings to have all of the cables hidden from view. Data recording is a snap, and changing menu items is easy as well. The only thing I wish I had known before I installed the cameras is their field of view, which I had expected to be zoomed out a bit more than they actually are. Had I known what I was going to see, I would have probably mounted the cameras back a little further from the areas they are recording in order to get a better overall view. My suggestion would be to lay the system out BEFORE installing it to ensure that you are happy with the view that you have before you start drilling holes and running cable. Overall, I am very happy with the system and I have already recommended this system to a family member who is planning on buying it as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone!

Rating:
My company bought this system to monitor an industrial robot. They work great and the picture quality is decent. It interfaced with our network easy enough. It is a great resource to be able to review the video history and even save screenshots and .avi videos to our pc’s.
Only cons that kept this from getting 5 stars:
1. The camera mounts are terrible. They are poorly designed and have to be readjusted often. We fixed this by globbing silicone caulk around the base so they wouldn’t move.
2. There is a well known hdd problem with these units. Apparently if you are recording and lose power, the hdd can get corrupted. This happened to us a few months after installing it. Luckily, all I had to do was use the reformat option in the menu and the hdd worked again even though we lost the data.
3. If you lose power you can lose all of your settings (camera setups and IP addresses) It can be a pain to fix but not that big of a deal.
4. When reviewing video history, the dvr makes chapters every 45-60mins. You pick one of these chapters and then have to ffw to the part you want to see. The ffw can be pretty slow and it takes awhile to get towards the end of the chapter.
Other than listed above we have been very happy with this system. At six hundred bucks you just can’t beat it. We just ordered another and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

We recently purchased and installed the SVAT web ready DVR system at our place of business after being hit by thieves and vandals. The night vision cameras were unbelievably bright in a dimly lit area. Some of the features I like about this unit is of course the night vision cameras, the ability to view the cameras over the internet, the ability to record continuously or as motion sensors.
This unit was well worth the money. We have not been burglarized or vandalized since installing these. The presence is an excellent deterent. HOWEVER, If they come back — We are ready!

SVAT CV0204DVR Web Ready DVR Security System w/4 High Resolution Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Surveillance Cameras I recently purchased this item after going through the past couple of years with some moderate vandilism and criminal mischief around our house (ie. taking our decorative hay bails and lining them up across the road, stealing our decorative garden light, and breaking into our backyard to let our dogs out ultimately with one getting struck by a vehicle.) Anyway, these events led me on the hunt for a way to secure the place my family lives. I researched many types of camera systems and even consulted some experts and with my security background I came to the conclusion I need something simple and easy to install. When I came across this product, I knew I found what I was looking for. Well priced, good coverage, connects to the tv in the living room or any tv in the house for that matter, and I can see it from anywhere in the world! One point here, if you work for the government or somewhere with major firewalls, don’t plan on being able to access this system from their network, I already tried and it doesn’t work. Anyway, the installation was easy, I did spend most of the day in the attic running cables, but it was worth it. As far as the night vision goes, it works fine for me, although it’s so windy here I do have to keep the lenses clean of the dust that blows around. The pictures day and night are perfect for my needs and it’s in full color during the day. I did have some trouble with my internet service provider at first when I was attempting to access the system over the internet. But, a couple of phone calls to the SVAT support desk and I was up and running without any problems except the whole government computer issue. I now have full coverage around the house and my worries are minimized.

The best thing is to check the operation of the system prior to running the cables.Do a dry run with the cameras and check your angles set up was quick and simple after that.Up and running a week without any issues well worth the price so far. If not this model I recommend a security video system no matter what the perp says the tapes don’t lie busted is busted Better security software & Remote would be a nice upgrade all in all I’m pleased

I have to rate this camera as an okay value. The good news is its easy to set up and use, and worked as advertised out of the box. The bad news: the picture washes out in direct sunlight and the colors also tend to wash out badly unless the lighting is just right. I also wish the cord was a lot longer, especially for the wall plug. That said I’m not unhappy with this purchase, it does what it is supposed to do at a good price once you get it all set-up and adjusted. For comparison I would say the picture is not as good as my hi-8 video camera, but still pretty good once adjusted, although pretty awful if in less than ideal conditions. Also doesn’t work at all at night. Picture would make a pretty good daylight security camera. The mic works but tends to crack if sounds are too loud etc. overall an okay value for the money.

This is a great product for the price you are paying. You need to be sure to purchase an extension for the camera because the cord it does bring is very short. It works pretty well during the day, although at times if the sun is towards it the image appears off color. It does not work well for night time. The image on the screen is completely black, and any car head lights appear distorted.

The worst camera I have ever dealt with!
I have purchased several systems and cameras for my businesses in the past and have found several good cameras in the same price range on Amazon. I decided to try this camera as an upgrade to one of my older B&Ws.
The reception and quality is aweful – even less than acceptable in this price range. Even plugged directly into my DVR, the quality was poor.
Go with the Swann minis – great reception and long term quality at the same price level.
I’m returning these and never using a Q-See product again.

This is a good rugged camera. Working great. The construction is all metal so it has a nice solid heavy feel to it. Images are decent in day and night operation. And the price is nice. It includes the power supply brick and a camera surveillance sticker. Don’t forget to order cable… I ordered 100 ft Video power Siamese BNC RCA cable for CCTV Security Cameras CBV100 1JE they also have this in 50ft, but I got the 100ft for more leeway. Shipping was fast and it arrived neatly packed from Warehouseseller.

Rating:
I purchased this camera as an addition to my video security system. This camera is more waterproof and weather resistant than the standard bullet cameras that came with the original system. The camera is very heavy for it’s size, but that is an indication of the quality material that it is construction from.
Installation is very easy as one side of the cable is the video feed and the other is the power connector. The lens in this camera has a wide range of view to cover a wide area. If you need greater distance, Warehouseseller has other models with 4-9mm lens, that will increase distance. I know because I just purchased one.
I mention Warehouseseller because there has been reports that some companies have been selling bootleg VIDEOSECUR cameras.
Warehouseseller is NOT one of them.
I checked with the manufacturer to ensure that my camera was legitimate despite the lower discounted price Warehouseseller charged!
The only person that is going to regret this purchase is the homies crusing my hood.

Rating:
This is a very nice little camera and I feel it is a great value if you are looking for a camera with a 3.6mm lens (aprox.90 degree field of view). The camera has very good night vision compared to the IR cameras that came with my system. The IR cameras that came with my system could not see down my driveway in the dark let alone see the street in front of my house at night. Now at night, I can see down my driveway and with the illumination from the streetlights I can see across the street.
The only down sides are no power supply and BNC cable connector instead of RCA for the camera video to the field wiring. This is not a big deal. Only other issue is the mounting holes for the camera, to mount the camera onto the bracket, are towards the back of the camera. The mounting bracket comes in sections and must be threaded together. My cameras did not want to stay aimed until I placed some epoxy on the threaded sections of the bracket and allowed it to set to make the bracket parts less susceptible to turning. Other than that, they are great. I have two more on the way.

I bought this to work with the Q-See 4-Channel PCI card in my PC. The picture is great when hooked directly to a TV, but the Q-See MPEG compression really defeats the high resolution of this cam. Night vision is pretty grainy beyond 10-15 feet, but the illumination is good within that range. My only gripe is that I intended to mount this under an eave of my roof, but the hole for the bracket is underneath the camera and the bracket is not long enough to mount under a horizontal surface. This will have to be vertically mounted on a wall, which is less attractive and less weather resistant. Otherwise; a pretty good buy. BEAR IN MIND: this does NOT include a power adapter or “Siamese Cabling”, factor that into your budget.

The camera does not worth the price. 1. The mount is cheezy. Has limited adjustment, doesn’t hold position. 2. The lense is unbelievably cheap, a plastic one. 3. Resolution is poor. 4. I sure wish that there was a standard way to express how wide or narrow the lens view is. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this camera was very wide angle, maybe 90 degrees or maybe more. I had recently purchased a “wireless” camera package from another supplier and found that they sucked. I had no product support from that seller and could not even get my money back.
I decided to pursue another product and found this one on Amazon. After reading other reviews of the product and the fact that this is a “hard wired” camera, the only way to go in my opinion, I purchased the system.
Installation was easy, and the cameras work perfectly. I was in the electronic security business for over 19 years and these cameras have picture quality close to cameras costing more than twice the amount. The support when I had a question about the product was prompt, courteous and complete. I RECOMMEND this seller and product if you are in the market for “hard wired” security cameras. For the price, this is an exceptional buy!

Setup on the camera was a breeze. I tested it out indoors first. Didn’t get any interfence at all even as I moved around the house with the camera. Image from the camera was so-so. About what I would expect from a 320 line 1/4 cheapo sensor. The infrared illuminator worked pretty well.
Now to the problem…the camera only lasted about 15 minutes before the image became horribly distorted. It would seem that the cmos sensor was overheating and causing the distortion. I unplugged the camera and let it cool down for a few minutes before plugging it back in. This solved the problem for about another 5 minutes before it was back to its un viewable distortion. I hope that I just got a defective unit because this is a serious design issue. No point in having a security camera that cant operate for more than a few minutes at a time. Sending it back for a refund.

Rating:
We purchased this security camera at a good price (cheaper than the amazon list price). The setup couldn’t have been easier. It is a standalone unit without the need of a computer. However, if you are technically inclined you can set it up with your PC for remote monitoring. The range of wireless is good, it claims 300ft, we tested within a radius of 150 ft and the reception and signal was excellent. It can serve as a good basic/intermediate security systems.
As I reviewed other security cameras in Amazon, the specs looks exactly like a SVT security camera which has has decent reviewes. In addition to security other users have found much better uses of this type of systems, such as bird watching, cat fights in the backyard
The other reviewer has raised an important point. His speculation, however, does seem like a speculation. The reception in our camera doesn’t degrade or lost signal with time.
Review by Justin A. Parr for Lorex LW1001 Color Wireless Surveillance System with Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Camera
Rating:
For the price, this camera is a good value.
It does not use the 2.4GHz footprint, so it does not interfere with WiFi or bluetooth.
I have tested the range out to about 100ft, through a brick wall.
Picture quality at night is reasonable for a low-end camera: Nothing spectacular, but not bad. The IR has a very LIMITED range — maybe 15 feet. The camera, when used in daytime “color” mode has a decent picture, and at night when used with a separate illumination source, such as an IR illuminator.
The packages that come with two cameras and one base only support sequence view, where the base switches from camera 1 to camera 2, then back to camera 1. If you use this with a DVR, you need a base for each camera. I have two of these operating concurrently on different channels as a stop-gap until I can get the cabling run for my other cameras. They work well together, with no interference.
By default, the camera and base are configured for “frequency 1″, so for the second camera, you have to disable frequency 1 and enable frequency 2 on the base, then switch the camera frequency to frequency 2. On the base, there are two dip switches, representing the two frequencies, so you flip both dip switches to their opposite position. On the camera, there is a slide switch under the hood at the back of the camera.
The camera is capable of running for about 3 hours on a 9V battery, which is nice if you have a specific event that you want to capture, without having to run a cable.
The camera base is NOT removable, vs. most cameras where you can unscrew the base and use a different mount. Likewise, the hood is also NOT removable.

This camera works great! I placed the camera in the front window to monitor who’s at my front door. Hook up was easy. Took less than five minutes. Picture quality is good, with no interference. Since this unit is expandable, I ordered another one to monitor the backyard. I’m using them from inside the windows to view out. If I wanted to drill wire holes through my home, I would have bought a hardwired camera system. These cameras are pretty cool. I’m going to hook them up to an old VHS CCTV recorder that I found on an auction site. The old VHS unit is minimal expense (18 bucks including shipping!) in comparison to the new DVRs and I’ll be able to see who was at my home while I was away. I recommend this camera for ease of operation, picture quality, expandability, and low cost.

This wireless camera system was one of the few that could be used outdoors. It was very easy to connect, has a really clear picture, has excellent wireless range, works better than expected at night and even has an audio feature that was an unknown bonus. I bought it on amazon at a great price and it came right away. I actually gave it as a gift (easily installed) to someone who lives alone and now has it pointed at their front door. it was a total win.

I had a lot of interference problems using the SVAT GX5203, I noticed that as soon as I disconnected my cordless phone (Panasonic 2.4GHz) the problem was solved, moving the receiver and/or the phone to another location did not work, so I had to replace my phone with a newer DECT 6.0 and everything worked just well. The reception range is pretty good and the image quality is a bit under my expectations, sound is clear and the camera seems to be tough enough for outdoor usage. The fact that the batteries need to be removed to plug the AC/DC adapter is beyond my understanding.
Review by L. Youngblood for SVAT GX5203 Wireless Portable Video Security System – 2.5-Inch LCD & Outdoor Night Vision Surveillance Camera
Rating:
I bought the SVAT GX5203 security system because the way my home is sitting I can not see the driveway nor the walkway to my house.
It works great for that. At first I thought the monitor was not working very well but I realized I had to move it to get the reception just right and work around the microwave, cordless phone etc. I have it hooked to a 13 inch TV because I decided it was easier to see. But I do like the ablility to take the small monitor with me when I am busy in the back of the house. I do have to move it around a bit sometimes to get it to come in but I realized it depended on where I posistioned the monitor in relation to the camera. I have the camera mounted under the eaves outside.
Also my cat chewed the electric cord the first week I had it and I wrote general support and recieved an answer by the next day and they very geneously offered to send a replacement cord.
I am planning on buying another camera for my monitor. I think this is a great system for the price and I would recommend this product based on my experience with it.

I bought the GX5203 for viewing my driveway and entryway, both of which are not visible to most parts of the house. I ended up using the camera to view the deer and wildlife coming to a corn feeder I have set up in the woods behind my house. It works great! Granted, It is an unobstructed view (lineof sight) from the feeder to where I have the monitor, but is at least 200 feet away and the recepction is crystal clear. The night viewing is even better than the day viewing because of the infrared capability. I would recommend this to any one who needs to keep an eye on something they can’t normally view.

This is a very good product, I use it to view my garage area when I am on the opposite end of the house. I can carry the portable monitor upstairs or anywhere in the house and can maintain a good reception. I have very few interruptions of signal. Overall I am happy with this given the price. The night vision is OK, but would suggest you leave an outside light on –it greatly enhances the picture quality. I also like the fact that you can have a permanent power AC adapter or battery option.
Review by J. R. Strickland for SVAT GX5203 Wireless Portable Video Security System – 2.5-Inch LCD & Outdoor Night Vision Surveillance Camera
Rating:
I purchased the SVAT GX5203 Wireless Portable Video Security System and an extra camera to use for home security.
As it happens after a month of trying, I’m convinced that this is a toy and not a very good toy at that. It isn’t meant to be used in the real world.
If the cameras are in a direct line to the receiver and about 15 feet away, the picture seen is acceptable. As soon as the cameras go outside where they will be used, the image deteriorates to a point that it isn’t useful.
I tried a dozen different configurations and still have a ton of interference.
I don’t have land-line based telephones and couldn’t figure the source of interference. As it happens after a week of trial and error, it turns out it’s my Belkin N1 wireless router. Turning on the cameras results in enough cross interference the laptop signal from the router is interrupted. Cameras on, computer off. Computer on, cameras off.
Even then the image rolls, tosses and turns.
The power cord on the back of the receiver plugs in to the battery compartment. If you want to use AC power, remove all the batteries. Most inconvenient and an engineering marvel…why, why, why would any engineer see this as acceptable?
To power the cameras outside one must use standard extensions. SVAT makes a slender power extension for their indoor cameras but not for the outdoor. Go figure that one out? There is no “skinny” power supply available for the cameras that need it most.
Instructions and compatibility data are unclear at best. Customer service is very responsive and quick to reply to your email request. It’s too bad the answer is always, “We can’t help you with that.” but at least they’re fast.
The poor image, lack of usefulness due to interference and overall poor design ensure this system will end up in the junk drawer as another error in shopping. My bad.
