The Everlasting Minolta SRT Film SLRs

For a small, but determined group, the Minolta SRT series cameras are still a viable path to SLR photography. Even though the cameras themselves have been out of production for over twenty years and Minolta exited the camera business in 2006, Minolta SRTs are still a hot commodity on ebay, pawnshops and used camera dealers. Minolta no longer makes cameras and digital SLRs are now king of the camera hill. Despite these factors, the SRT camera line is still producing great images.

The SRT101 started the series when it was introduced in 1966. Over the next 15 years, Minolta produced the SRT100, SRT102, SRT200, 201 and 202. The SRT series also appeared with other names outside the US. In addition, Minolta produced the SRT-MC to be sold primarily by K-mart. A similar model, the SRT-SC was sold by JC Penny.

With the huge distribution and rugged metal construction, you can understand why so many SRTs survive today. Yet it would seem they are hopelessly outdated compared with the array of fine digital cameras available. Why would any one want one of these old warhorses instead of a dSLR?

Make no mistake, digital SLRs offer a number of advantages that no film SLR can match. Digital SLR’s allow you to preview your shots, you can transfer images to your computer for editing and you can use the same memory card over and over. In addition to not offering digital features, the SRT lacks autofocus, dedicated flash, program mode and auto film advance — that is a pretty extensive list of lacking features.

Yet it is those missing features that make the cameras attractive to so many current users, With no electronics, the SRT returns the photographer to an era when one’s own knowledge was paramount to getting successful images. As a purely manual camera, the SRT forces the users to learn photography from the ground level. Many users are using a SRT as s stepping stone to learning photography before splurging a full featured digital SLR.

Another attractive aspect is cost. Although there are a number of enthusiastic Minolta collectors, so many SRTs were produced and so many were well preserved by their owners, that good, used SRTs are still plentiful. While first class SRTs may eventually become highly collectible, for now you can easily obtain a good, useable model with lens for less than a hundred dollars. A little searching may turn up models for far less.

Even better, there are literately tons of lenses available for these cameras. Minolta, of course, produced the lion’s share of these lenses, under the Rokker X and Celtic brand names. Vivitar, Tamron, Soligor and many others also produced excellent lenses to fit the SRT series. Unlike the autofocus A-Mount Minolta lenses that can be used on both Sony and Minolta dSLRs, the X-mount lenses won’t fit any dSLR without an adapter. This means you can find some excellent X-Mount lens bargains. As more and more users switch to digital, their old Rokkor-X lenses end up on the auction block. The SRT shooter can find some truly rare and excellent lenses at a price that won’t strain the budget.

Of course there are a few caveats. If you should happen on a SRT model, you have to remember it is at least twenty years old and the original SRT models have been around for more than forty years. Bad things can happen to a camera after all that time, particularly if it has been sitting unused in a closet somewhere. Although the SRTs have reputation for great reliability, always check the camera carefully before buying. After time, the shutter speeds have been known become inaccurate, requiring repair to maintain good exposures, The seals around the cameras back may start disintegrating, allowing light into the camera. New seals are available and it is a fairly simple fix.

Undoubtedly the biggest concern is the lack of a battery for the camera’s internal meter. The meter on the SRT series is highly accurate, but it was designed to use a 1.35v PX-625 mercury cell. Environmental concerns ended the production of he mercury cells, and the available silver oxide cells are the wrong voltage.

This is really a paper tiger. Use of a silver oxide battery doesn’t seem to affect the meter reading that greatly. If you were using 1960s era film, which had very narrow latitude, the voltage difference might be critical. With today’s wide latitude films, I have used the readily available MS76 1.5v silver oxide cell with excellent results.

In addition, the camera will work fine without a battery, so you could use a hand held light meter.

If you want to really learn photography, there is no better way to start than a good, manual SLR. And there are few manual SLRs that offer reliability and accessory options at as low a price as a Minolta SRT.

With this lens, you really get a 180 degree, I confirm this. The bad point is that it don’t have attachment for filters on it, so you can’t add, for example, a simple UV filter to protect it’s glass. Maybe its because if it could, it would result on loss of angle.

I have a standard 18-55 lens on my pentax, and if adjusted to 35mm it already result in 180 degree of view. If positioned to less than 35 there is no gain of angle, you only get black corners.

In overall I really recomend this product.

    Rating:
I got this lens so I could take some fisheye sunset/landscape shots, but the low quality of the glass makes me wish I hadn’t. Any shots including the sun reflect (no pun intended) the low quality of the glass (speckles, etc). Yes, I cleaned it. Yes, I keep the caps on it until I’m ready to use it. First time out in the field I was so disappointed I haven’t put it back on my camera yet. I suppose it’s decent for indoor shots, but you’ll need plenty of light.

A fisheye can lend itself to some really unique ways of looking at things. I was really excited to get one. So excited that I couldn’t wait to save up for a $600 fisheye lens. I ordered this attachment with the understanding that it is a temporary thing until I can practically invest in a real fisheye lens.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with it though. It is very easy to attach to my Nikon 52mm 18-55 lens. I tried attaching it to my 70-300mm lens but the fisheye effect decreases as the zoom increases–the fisheye effect is almost nothing at 100mm focal length, so this attachment will be just for my 18-55mm lens. At 18mm focal length, I can see nearly 180 degrees. Things at the edges are very distorted of course, but its fun to be able to see my feet when I point the camera straight ahead.

I ordered it specifically to photograph a theater production. I had mixed results. In the low light of the theater, I had a hard time getting a clear photo, so I had to turn my ISO up–which I don’t like to do, as it makes for a slightly noisier photo. The effect is cool though and I could get some angles of the stage that I couldn’t get with a normal lens, so in all, I was happy with the results.

The macro uses are very good though. I’ve only done some test shots, but I can’t wait to try some more.

the lens that holds the top position on my wishlist is sigma’s 10-20mm wide angle. it’s coming up with the $470+ that is the hard part.

so in an effort to quench my thirst for wide angle shooting while not emptying the wallet, i opted for this .25x lens adapter. in hindsight, i probably should have kept that $70 in the sigma fund, but alas.

the item was ordered, paid for, and arrived on my doorstep before it was scheduled to, so i thank Cameta Camera for their quick process. i eagerly took the adapter (i refuse to call it a lens) out of its box, and selected the proper ring size to be used on my nikon 18-55 kit lens. it screwed on no problem, and seemed to have a secure fit. the adapter is heavy, and likely contains thick glass, and metal construction. overall feel seems very sturdy.

it’s a fun little toy to use, but certainly no realy alternative to a quality wide angle or fisheye lens. i find that i RARELY dial in below 35mm, as i’m not a fan of the “looking thru a hotel door” look. keeping it around 35mm gives you about ~9mm focal length (~13mm equivalent for us crop sensor people).

one thing i did notice right off the bat, was that autofocus was a challenge as the adapter is rather heavy…it took some effort on the focus motor’s part. manual focus is probably better so as not to kill the motor, but the focus ring on my lens is pretty easy to move, and at any angle other than horizonal the adapter’s weight can move the focus. im sure this isnt true on all lenses, but it is on mine.

image quality leaves a bit to be desired, but again…for $70, you can’t expect tack sharp pictures. the center focal point of the adapter is pretty good, but the fall-off is rather immediate, and by the outside edges of the image, blur takes over.

ive gotten some neat pics with this adapter on, but is not something i would rely on if i was looking for a high quality image. taking pics of people with it is fun, since you get that cool fisheye distortion, and fans of skate photography will probably have a good time with it.

just keep in mind that this is a lens adapter, and the optics are NOT what those of a quality lens would be. if you go into it knowing that it’s a bit of a novelty, i’m sure you won’t be too disappointed.

as for me, i can’t wait to get my 10-20mm.

  6. Red Peters says:

Review by Red Peters for Op/Tech 18″ SLR Rainsleeve for Digital & Film Cameras with Lenses up to 7″ Diameter, 18″ Long
    Rating:
I bought a pack of these sleeves to use when shooting outdoor sports in the rain. I’m not a pro photographer and couldn’t justify the expense of the superior Aquatech rain gear. I needed something small and light that fits in my camera backpack and keeps me shooting during poor weather conditions I occasionally encounter.

If you do a lot of shooting in questionable weather and can justify the $200 cost, the Aquatech is obviously a better solution. But for $6, the Op/Tech sleeves are hard to beat in a pinch, particularly for casual photographers.

The sleeves are large enough to cover most all but the largest of the pro telephoto lenses. It fits my D300 with battery pack and 70-200 2.8 with room to spare. The sleeve has a hole in the rear – just remove your eyepiece cover, stretch the hole over the eyepiece, and replace the cover to hold it in place. The sleeve has a drawstring closure in front that holds very securely to the lens hood. The plastic is transparent and thin enough to allow operation of all the controls right through the sleeve (vs, sliding your hands up inside). It’s a very usable solution, although it does make adjusting the zoom a bit more difficult. But again, this is intended to be more of an emergency or occasional rain solution.

I’ve spent endless hours shooting football games in the rain and the protection provided is excellent. As long as you don’t poke a hole in it, your equipment will stay dry. I’m able to reuse them multiple times.

Pros: Very low cost, stores anywhere, excellent protection, low tech ease of use, able to see all of the camera’s controls, works with tripods and monopods.

Cons: Takes a few minutes to put on and get adjusted, makes accessing some controls a little awkward (but not impossible), far too long for short lenses.

Bottom line: Excellent emergency protection during occasional bad weather for cameras with larger lenses. Those using smaller lenses should look for another solution.

    Rating:
Works well to protect the camera from rain. Had to use this a couple times on my recent trip to Alaska. My only problem is it takes some time to get this thing on the camera properly, once it’s on it’s difficult to manipulate the lens zoom. Also if you’re using a shorter lens then this thing is pretty much pointless since there’s too much excess sleeve and nowhere to put it. The product itself is a high quality plastic too, not cheap like a grocery store bag.

Small and compact, folded up tiny and shoved it in my backpack, acted as extra padding for my lenses. :)

It worked great with the Canon 40d and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens.

It worked good with the 40d and Canon 17-40mm f/4.0L.

I gave up trying with my 40d and Canon 50mm f/1.8.

I purchased this item thinking it was a good idea to have packed with camera accessories “just in case”. I knew I was traveling to Europe on business and would have some free time to take some shots of local flavor. Upon taking a road trip to Salzburg, we encountered rain that turned to sleet that turned to snow. Salzburg was a wet, snowy photo op against the backdrop of cathedrals, snow capped mountains, and the location for scenes from the “Sound of Music”. No umbrella – no cover. But I had a rain sleeve! It worked perfectly (except for some random drops on the lens, which was protected by a UV filter anyway, so no damage. I may have looked a little funny, but I think I captured more shots in the wet weather than anyone who had to hide their pocket digitals under their coats. And those brave enough to shoot with SLRs had to juggle umbrellas (which didn’t look like much fun). Also was able to shoot some great street shots without the worry of wetness (or exposure to the unsuspecting subjects). I was glad to have this. I will order more. Hey, you never know…

  9. Stogie1020 says:

Review by Stogie1020 for Op/Tech 18″ SLR Rainsleeve for Digital & Film Cameras with Lenses up to 7″ Diameter, 18″ Long
    Rating:
While obviously far from a U/W housing, for a couple of dollars, this little glorified plastic bag does a really good job! The cinch around the lens opening works well, and accommodates a 70-200F4 on a Canon 40D with plenty of room to spare.

If one is careful to not tear the opening designed for the eyepiece, this device can be used many times, although this is the apparent weak spot, so be gentle putting this on and taking it off.

I have used this in a pretty bad rain storm, and it kept the camera and lens body dry, although conditions got so bad, I couldn’t keep water off the lens face, and gave up.

Could you make this with a giant zip lock and a rubber band? Sure, but for the low cost to buy these, I have one in each of my camera bags just in case.

I’ve had the Canon ElanIIE for 8 months and I’ve been very pleased so far. Fellow photography students who bought nikon N70 or N90 are still trying to figure out how to use them. The Canon Elan IIE is simple to operate, and I like having dials instead of so many little buttons. Outstanding features include the autofocus. The eye-control focus is as fast as regular autofocus. Also it has convenient on-camera flash which is of course not as powerful as an accesory flash like the 380ex or 550ex, but it’s come in handy for me plenty of times. And you can use flash exposure compensation up to two stops in either direction! I think the best feature is it’s simplicity. It’s an excellent bridge between point&shoot and professional. By the way, I got a Tamron 80-200, 4.5-5.6 lens that works beautifully with it.

If you can get this camera, GET IT. Just stay as far away as you can from the 28-80mm consumer lens this comes with! Spend the few extra bucks and get the 28-105 or 28-135 IS lens instead (or better yet, get some high quality prime lenses: 24, 50, 100, etc). Remember, it’s not the camera that makes the image, it’s the lens in front of it. The lens this kit comes with is a piece of garbage and you’ll likely get the same images as you would from a $150 point and shoot. You’ll NEVER get an acceptable 20X30 image from this lens or even a high-quality 8X10 for that matter. I’ve had the camera for a number of years and it’s up to just about any task you can throw at it. Canon has a winner with the Elan II, but a dud with the lens they include in this kit.

Let’s start with durability. I’ve had this camera for two years, and even though I’ve dropped it, left it in the sun, gotten it wet (with sea water!) and done about a hundred other things to it, it still works perfectly. That is impressive. But you buy a camera for the quality of its pictures, and the Elan II excels in this regard. I agree with other reviewers that you should upgrade to a better lens than the one that comes with it, but this body will help you get the outstanding photos you want. This is the perfect camera for all levels of expertise, except perhaps for the total professional. I was a beginner when I bought the Elan II, and it was simple enough for me to use out of the box. Now that I’ve been studying photography for a couple years, I still haven’t outgrown this camera. It has all the advanced features you want. It allows you to go fully manual or fully automatic, plus any combination in between. The controls are intuitively laid out and simple to use. And don’t underestimate the value of having access to Canon’s complete line of EOS lenses.

I traded a well-seasoned Minolta 700 for the IIe with eye-tracking. The IIe is more versatile and easy to use as a creative camera. It really can’t be beat as a fully automatic, very fast and very quiet auto-eveything 35mm. Perfect for planned composition and point & shoot alike. Only regret is not opting for a longer zoom lens – - the 35-80 is good, but many outdoor shots cry for something over 100.

This is a terrific camera, very powerful and as flexible or as simple as you want it to be. The only advice I would give is to pay the extra $$$and get the Elan IIe which has the eye controlled focus system. Simply put, where you look is where you focus! This outstanding feature will very soon become the industry standard and will revolutionize the way you take photographs.

In my day (15 years ago), a typical manual SLR had a max of 1/1000 shutter speed and a 50mm lens. Today, most manual SLR’s have a max of 1/2000 and a zoom lens. The Vivitar V4000 camera is a modern-day entry-level SLR. The K-mount lens mount was developed by Pentax and incorporated in the extremely popular Pentax K-1000 released in the 1970s and sold as new until being discontinued by Pentax recently. The K-mount is pretty much THE lens mount for manual focus lenses and is shared across several manufacturer’s lines: Pentax, Vivitar, Olympus, and Chinon to name a few, so you can expect to find a variety of lenses (new and used) at just about every camera shop in town. A K-mount lens made in the ’80s will fit a ’00s K-mount camera. As you look at the camera front, the knob on the right at the top is the film rewinder. The flash shoe is in the middle, the knob next to it on the left is the film speed and shutter speed selector, and the film winder is on the far left. A ring around the base of the lens sets the aperture, from f3 to f22 (or maybe f16, I can’t recall exactly). Hands-off shutter cable release is the inexpensive screw-in type, widely used and available everywhere. Light metering is 3 LED lights – 1 red over, 1 green in, 1 red under, and averages the frame (I don’t believe center-weighted is available but I could be wrong). The batteries power the meter only, so you can still use the camera if the batteries die (something that autofocus cameras can’t do).If you missed your chance to get a Pentax K-1000 fresh from the Asahi factory, you’ll be pleased to know you can get the updated competitive product now.

This Camera is great for first time photographers, and also more experienced photographers. Earlier this year I took a photography class in which I knew nothing about SLR’s, but I found this camera easy to learn and operate. It has a great choice of shutter speed and also has a light meter that will help create great exposures, its light-weight makes it easy to handle, and it’s fairly inexpensive. I think it is a great buy for anyone interested in photography.

The K-mount is pretty much THE lens mount for manual focus lenses and is shared across several manufacturer’s lines. What could have been better would be an aperture setting below 3.5– the fact that the lowest aperture is so high makes it difficult to get good exposures in all types of weather without lowering the shutter spead or using a tripod, something that’s not always handy. I found this camera easy to learn and operate. It has a great choice of shutter speed and also has a light meter that will help create great exposures, its light-weight makes it easy to handle, and it’s fairly inexpensive. If you are just getting into cameras, get something else…but if you have been with cameras for a while, even if you are a novice, this is a good buy. I bought this camera in January 2002 after weeks of researching all types of SLRs on amazon.com. I finally decided on this one and I know I made the right choice! I am 17 years old and this is my first “serious” camera. After reading the instruction manual and after going through about 2 rolls of “experimental” film, I found it easy to take beautiful, clear and sharp photgraphs. I actually prefer the all-manual settings. They are easy to get used to, and the simplicty of the camera helps you to focus on taking great pictures right away. The light meter is great, and indispensible to me. The camera feels balanced and sturdy and well made.
    I highly recommend it!

I needed a bag for my new dSLR camera & I was interested in a tripod as well. I figured for the price I couldn’t go wrong & even if it wasn’t that great it would tide me over for now. I ordered it and when I received it I was pleasantly surprised. The back pack is a little smaller then a regular size school back pack. It holds my camera & accessories perfectly & I am even able to put my note book and school book (taking photography class). Its great for trips too. I pack up my shooting gear and put my wallet in there and I have everything I need. The cleaning kit is basic but nice to have and also fits in the back pack. The pictures I was show the tripod fitting in a little side compartment. I haven’t tried that yet. The tripod was actually a lot bigger then I expected. Its not the fanciest tripod ever, but it holds my Canon Rebel perfectly and so far its working out great. I’m very impressed with all of it. I would highly recommend getting it if you are interested in a good size camera case & tripod and aren’t looking to spend a fortune.
