More than once, I’ve encountered folks who are unsure that a digital camera can equal the capabilities of a film camera. And in some senses, they have a right to be concerned. But overall, the results are clear – modern profession digital SLR cameras now have a big edge.
So, what’s the difference you may ask?
Film SLR Cameras
1. Low light capabilities are determined by film speed – the higher the number, the lower the light they can handle. Even with professional film, grain goes up considerably as you increase the film speed. That being said, the actual grain on a film print can be desirable (and digitally duplicated) for some settings and tastes.
2. Your resolution is limited by your film. The better the film you purchase, the better it’s capability to be blown up, but with any 35mm film, enlargements beyond 8×10 will lose their crispness.
Digital Point and Shoot Cameras
These cameras often give digital photography a bad name. Outside, with good light, the photos look great, but everyone has seen a digital photo where the person is either extremely dark, or glowing. The color doesn’t seem to be great, and anytime you take a night time shot, the background is pitch black. Here’s why you shouldn’t do most shoots with this type of camera.
1. Small image sensor. Unlike your film or digital SLR, the sensors on these cameras are a fraction of the size, enabling a compact camera. But you lose a lot when you make this compromise. Add a high megapixel rating, and the problem is compounded. Simply put, these cameras will have much more noise and less clarity whenever you encounter anything but bright light.
2. No external flash. Having only a small onboard direct flash makes for photos that are either washed out or too dark – if you have multiple subjects, sometimes you’ll get a bit of both.
3. No interchangeable lenses – having only one fixed lens means usually you have a high aperture (which doesn’t allow lots of light in) as well as issues with wide angle and zoom shots. And as a note, never use digital zoom – turn that feature off.
Digital SLR Cameras
Sigital SLRs have come a long way in the past 15 years. From being an expensive novelty, to professional mainstream. Even in the past 6 years (since I started our business), the gains have been noticeable and wonderful. I started with a 6.0 MP Canon that worked well, but still didn’t handle low-light scenarios as well as a nice film SLR. Today, we shoot with a 21 MP Canon that blows even your high end film cameras out of the water in both resolution and low light capabilities.
1. Bigger image sensor. Whether you are shooting a 4/3 sensor or a full size sensor with your SLR, it is many times larger than even your best point and shoot cameras. This allows for a larger spacing between pixel sensors and makes for much better low light capabilities.
2. Better resolution. I shoot a Canon 5D MkII which shoots 21 MP images – and at that size, I can blow my photos up to poster size without loosing clarity. Do that with a 35mm negative, and you would have a very soft image.
3. Interchangeable lenses. Having this capability, like in the 35mm SLRs is wonderful. It allows you to have a variety of lenses catered to your exact needs – whether it be low light, long range, or wide angle shots.
4. External flash. This is one of the biggest components of a good photo. Having an external flash allows for so much more lighting options – far improved over the point and shoot.

Review by HAJIME DOI for Vivitar Series 1 85mm f/1.4 Manual Lens for Pentax Film & Digital SLR Cameras
Rating:
I’m in Tokyo, it took about 10 days to reach me from USA. Forwarder was UPS.
This portrait lens is so great touch, nice bokeh, good materials, compared with
Pentax A typed MF lenses.
Price is wonderful too. I’m very satisfied with this.
I don’t like Samyang Brand and its finish.
Vivitar looks and sounds better than original Samyang finish, I think.
The last, my headache is that I want to test this Vivitar lens with Full-frame Digital Pentax, not APS-C.
Actually, EF mount Vivitar is troublesome to use!

Review by seraphimblade for Kenko 420-800mm Telephoto Zoom Lens with 2x Teleconverter (=420-1600mm) + Tripod + Case + Accessory Kit for Canon 50D, 30D, 20D, 5D, 1D Digital Rebel XS, XSi, T1i & Film SLR Cameras
Rating:
The lens is of decent quality, though I somewhat dislike the lack of autofocus ability and the difficulty of focusing manually, as well as the fact that an adapter is not included for the front of the lens, so my standard Canon filters will not fit. (An adapter is included for the rear so that it will at least fit the camera!) It is also difficult and cumbersome to adjust the zoom setting. This being said, the lens does take good quality pictures once it finally is set up, and the rest of the included equipment is of good quality as well. I’ve been especially pleasantly surprised by the tripod, which is lighter-weight and more sturdy than my girlfriend’s which was purchased in a camera store.
I would recommend the lens mainly for long-distance still shots, as it is simply too cumbersome to use on anything which may move at all between setting up the tripod and taking the shot.

I have only used this lens a handful of times. I recently reviewed some pictures of a hawk that I had taken with this lens and they looked better than I expected. This will not give you tack sharp pictures but its a fun lens to play with. Great for moon shots.

Review by Daniel Lee for Kenko 420-800mm f/8.3-16 Vari Super Telephoto Zoom Lens with Mount for Canon EOS 30D 20D 5D Digital Rebel XT XTI & Film SLR Cameras
Rating:
I own this in the Canon EOS mount.. they are in fact all the same, just ships with a different T-mount adapter, and the 420-1600 just ships with a 2x teleconverter.
This is a very light weight lens, especially for its focal length, it has no aperture blades, it’s completely empty on the inside, its like an old style hand telescope. When sources of strong constrast/light are coming toward the camera, expect heavy chromatic aberration, free of chromatic aberration in other situations.
However, I’ve found a particularly excellent use for this lens, which is taking great photos of the moon on a tripod with a shutter release cable on my Canon 30D.
Although be warned, the lens is very physically long, although light, it makes focussing extremely difficult, especially on a tripod, as there is no tripod collar, you attached the camera to the tripod, then when you zoom the lens all the way (linear pull zoom) the lens is over 30cm long (12 inches!), although light because its empty, its supported on the tripod from the camera base, so soon as you touch the lens or camera, or the focussing ring, the image in the view finder shakes like crazy while trying to focus, making it hard to focus on the most useful application with this lens… on a tripod.
You can only use this lens hand held in full day light, and if you’re doing so you’ll need a shutter speed of 1/500 sec to eliminate blur from your own movement (due to the massive focal length), 1/250 sec is the minimum for sharp shots I could personally get.
And shooting in daylight, whether hand held or tripod, you’re going to want to use a 1A sky filter AND a polarising filter (or at least one of them) to increase colour and contrast, luckily this thing comes with a lens hood.
The top of this lens screws off easily, so you can keep the lens pieces clean, if they ever develop fungus, good thing about this lens is water wont damage it, as it doesnt even have aperture blades, just glass and coated metal.
Though since the tip screws off you could cut a circle out of some black card then a hole in the middle and insert it into the middle of the lens to create your own aperture to try and improve sharpness and increase depth of field, and reduce aberration and flare etc.
I hope this helps.
Review by W. Moody for Kenko 420-800mm f/8.3-16 Vari Super Telephoto Zoom Lens with Mount for Canon EOS 30D 20D 5D Digital Rebel XT XTI & Film SLR Cameras
Rating:
Easy to use. Not too easy to carry with you in the camera bag due to bulk. You need a tripod to use. Manual focus. I get great details on the moon. Also able to use for birds.
Review by Warren Liick for Phoenix 650-1300mm f/8-16 Telephoto Lens with Mount for Canon EOS 30D 20D 5D Digital Rebel XT XTI & Film SLR Cameras
Rating:
A fun lens for the price. It takes a very steady tripod to shoot with this focal length as the smallest vibration becomes a large shake at the end of the lens. I cant see it getting much use in my lens arsenal, but if you need to zoom way, way out, it can read license plates from many blocks away. Dont buy it as your only telephoto, but if you know that you are getting what you pay for, its not a bad lens.
