I bought this lens for my Pentax K100D. The folks over at FredMiranda gave it consistantly good reviews, and the zoom range seemed perfect for a general walk-around lens. It is certainly a nicely-built lens and a comfortable weight. I found the auto-focus to be quick and generally accurate. The lens took great pictures in the 24-100 mm portion of the focal range, but I could not get good pictures out of it at the longer focal lengths for the life of me. I tried different apertures, manual focus, tripod, everything I could think of, but almost everything came out too soft for my taste. I am a hobbyist, not a pro, so maybe the problem was user error. Or maybe I got a bad copy of the lens. I am open to these possibilities, but I felt I should share my experience, regardless. If I’d only wanted 24-100, I’d have bought something different. I ended up sending this lens back, and I’m considering Pentax’s 24-90, now, which is supposed to be quite good. Props to Amazon for the usual quick shipping and painless return policy.

This is a quality constructed, sturdy, “big dumb lens” that provides beautiful pictures. It does NOT autofocus and the Canon EOS focusing dots will not illuminate to aid you with focusing. You must buy a manual focusing screen (about $105 from Katz Eye Optics and I installed it myself) for this to work well, otherwise you simply focus with your eye while looking through the viewfinder and hope for the best.

This is a fairly new lens by Voigtlander, and compares to the 40mm Ultron in size and build, and optical performance (less the smaller min. aperture). Another excellent lens by Voigtlander for all mounts it is available in.
They don’t get better than this for the price.

I’ve only used this lens a couple of times. It doesn’t work well with the 2x converter. Used by itself the pictures are decent – for an inexpensive lens. For someone on a budget it is a decent lens. If you are going to sell your photos spend a few hundred and get a good lens.

I bought this lens to play around with. That is all it was good for, playing around. I sold mine about a month after I bought it to someone who wanted to do the same thing. It is very soft and hell to focus. Forget using the teleconverter. You might as well be looking into a black hole. If you really need 500mm, buy a teleconverter for your 200mm lens if you have it. A used one is about the same price.
I used it on a D50. It took about 20 shots to get one that was useable. If you are looking for a spotting scope, it does that well.
I did try the Pro Optics F6.3 version and it was a bit sharper but 6.3 made focusing a bit more tricky even though there was more light in the viewfinder.

I am not going to lie, this isnt the best of lenses…
But for the cost, it is well worth it. I bought this lens used off ebay, and only planned on using it 3 times a year. One of those better to have it, and not need it, then need it and not have it.
I tried it out, and it worked great for taking pictures of the moon. I uploaded one on here, so look at the top under customer photos. I used it with a Canon XT camera, and a wired remote to elimate camera shake.
I highly recommend getting a wired, or wireless remote…
I used it with the 1000mm doubler, and a tripod. That far out, breathing on it will make it shake.
Unless you want to pay $400 for a 500/1000mm lens that you will only use two times a year. This is well worth it…
p.s. I have seen many negative reviews for this lens on other websites… The main problem, the people leaving the negative reviews never used the lens. They were judging it on cost, and company.
