Studying Photography – Does It Really Require Formal Education?

You need to know the ropes of business and not just the artistic aspect of photography, if you are to make it on your own as a professional photographer. And then you need to be good enough at your skill to realize what lens is right for what particular conditions. Being a hobbyist photographer is a whole different thing, and being a professional is quite another. If you are really serious about taking this up as a means to earn your livelihood, why not consider going to photography school?
It is true that you can become a good photographer without a degree, as many have in the past. However a few classes are only going to help you along the way. If you are completely new to the subject you should at least get a basic course. You will find a variety of courses out there, and things like continuing education and distance education are great ways to learn the subject without giving it 100% of your time. More often than not, short courses are enough to get one hooked on to the craft and therefore take a few more complicated courses and workshops.
Distance Learning
If you have a job then distance learning can really be it for you. You could continue with your current schedule and never take a risk. If you learn enough and are confident with a few assignments under your belt, then you can leave the day job and concentrate full time on your shooting.
The various choices in photography
Photography is a general term used to describe a variety of professionals. You could be an underwater photographer, an aerial photographer or a fashion photographer just to name a few. As you can well imagine, the only similarity between the three classes mentioned above is the use of the camera. An underwater photographer would need additional training in diving, an aerial photographer would need to be trained in the safety of the skies and a fashion photographer needs to have an eye for fashion. You need to ask yourself what branch of photography you are best cut out for, and take your time to decide on this before you begin building a portfolio around the topic. This is where a training in the subject can really assist you to evaluate your self. When you are given assignments in school to shoot this or that, you quickly begin to understand what you are cut out for. If you are not a very social person, fashion and weddings is not for you, but you may be excellent at real estate photography.
The diversity you find in courses
When you take a course you are opened up to various kinds of photography. Assignments which you work with for your grades could range from fashion, to still life, to high speed photography. This exposure is crucial as you decide on your future job prospects.

Photography Courses – Learning More Than Just The Basics!

You could simply choose photography as an ancillary subject to whatever it is that you may already be studying. You may be wondering if you could learn the subject without attending the classes at all, and the answer to this one is YES. If you have the dedication to try out new ideas and the equipment to see them through you can definitely train your own self to be a photographer.
And then there is the option of distance education that most photographers love simply because it gives them the freedom to experiment on their own while still getting a recognized degree at the end of the day. The NY Institute of photography is a fine example of a college offering such an option.
You will need to get educated on elements of photography such as lighting, exposure, composition and lenses. Of course you can take this course even while you are working at a job, since it is a distance education thing. Any photography course should also include a good amount of practical shooting exposure. Generally about half the emphasis goes on the portfolio that you can make by the end of every assignment.
You don’t need chemicals any more!
Gone are the days when a photographer had to learn dark room techniques to develop and correct his or her own work. Today with digital photography all you need is a personal computer to edit your images. Keep in mind though that learning a software to edit your images is not as easy as it sounds. While it is a matter of minutes before you learn how to handle brightness, contrast and exposure level on a computer it is much more challenging to make major changes to a photograph, and that is something that will probably not be a part of your photography course. Adobe Photoshop is a favorite photo editing software among photographers.
Of course, getting into photography school full time could be the best option if you have the time. But there have been many successful photographers who never went to school at all. All that counts when you meet a client is the quality of your sample photo album, what photographers call their portfolio. Get this right and you have a chance. Luckily photography is not yet a field where employers have begun asking for degrees. Still, if you wish to get into something as complex and as challenging as medical photography, neither can you learn it on your own and nor can you hope to get a job without a qualification.
There are many ways to become a photographer, and getting a degree in photography is one of the ways. Don’t let the lack of college education ever stop you from chasing your dreams.

This isn’t the time to pinch pennies. We know that you’ve dug deep into your pockets to put yourself through photography school, but your portfolio is a worthwhile investment. Don’t be scared off by the price of a glossy, 8″ by 12″ print on quality paper-if you choose carefully, it will last through the years and end up paying for itself when you nab a job. Of course, you need to be practical, and a full-size print isn’t necessary for absolutely every photograph in your portfolio. Just make sure that your best work looks its best for this important occasion
QUALITY VS QUANTITY
If you’re a perfectionist, then this is a decision you’ll agonize over. What if, at this particular instant of artistic pique, you only truly love three of your shots? Should you include a 50-photograph entourage of mediocre ones to pad out your portfolio? When trying to walk that fine line between quality and quantity, erring on the side of quality is probably a safer bet. After all, the more photographs your employer has to rifle through, the lesser the impact of each one. And there’s nothing like a poor photograph to counteract the strong impression left by one of your best ones. Being overly picky can also lead to your downfall, however. If you show up with a scant offering of past photographs, your employer will question the reasons behind the slim selection. Are you so sloppy and bad at meeting deadlines that you failed to order your prints on time? Or do you simply not have that many good shots? Attain a good balance in your portfolio by not going to either extreme.
DIVERSIFICATION
Don’t show up with 100 shots of the sky taken on a single, perfect afternoon. Building your photography portfolio isn’t a simple matter of finding all your best photos and leaving out your worst; you also need to consider what types of photos are included. You want to prove that you can diversify, that you’ll be able to handle all manner of assignments given to you at your future job. If you have a particular strength, then represent it by all means, but don’t let the other facets of your work fade into the background.
ALL IN THE DETAILS
Be an expert about your own work. While going through your portfolio, your employer will likely have questions about the camera, lens, exposure, and editing behind your photographs. Brush up on your own portfolio’s history so you aren’t left looking ignorant and forgetful when the inquisition comes. Better yet, note these relevant details in your portfolio, either on a separate sheet or in the margins or the back of each photograph.
A SECOND OPINION
In the end, when you’ve assembled your winning portfolio and you can’t imagine adding or removing a single shot…get a second opinion. Seek advice from someone you trust: a teacher, a mentor, a fellow student who admires the same photographers that you do. You don’t have to abide by their personal preferences, but it’s a good thing to be aware that differing opinions on a photograph do exist. And if reactions are extremely strong or you see a pattern emerging among various people polled, they might be indicative of a truth that you overlooked. It’s often hard for a photographer to gain some perspective because of all the hard work you’ve put into getting that special shot, so give other people a chance to open your eyes a bit.
Of course, in the end, the photos will speak for themselves. Don’t wait until the last minute to compile your portfolio; it should be a constant work-in-progress as you assess the changing caliber of your photography and update older shots with better examples using more refined techniques. Strengthen it here and there, weed out the weaker sections, and your portfolio will always showcase you at your best.
