Don’t Waste Money On A Tripod Until You Read This
A common mistake I often see with photography enthusiasts is that they try to get by using cheap tripods. Often these are difficult to use and don’t hold the camera steady. This really is a waste of money and for a slightly increased investment they could have an excellent tripod that makes life easy. Here are some of my tips in what to look for when buying a tripod.
Tip 1 – Buy a quality brand
It’s a simple fact in life that you tend to get what you pay for and that the most respected names tend to produce the best equipment. Look at the equipment used by professionals and you will see the same manufacturers cropping up time and again. There is a reason for this and that is they are good reliable tripods.
Tip 2 – Buy the Head and Legs separately
Often this is only possible with quality manufacturers. The tripod head has many variations and not all will suite everyone. Many tripod legs are also quite distinct and have different features. I always ensure that my tripod legs allow for removal of the centre column and for the legs to spread out very wide. This allows me to position the camera very low to the ground. Another useful feature is to be able to remove the centre column and insert it horizontally across the tripod legs. This is great for macro work.
Tip 3 – Beware specialist designs
I have one tripod which allows for the legs to be positioned independently of each other and at any angle. Rather than a traditional centre column it has a long neck which can also be positioned at any angle. This is a very specialist design and I purchased it specifically for macro work. It is however publicised as a landscape tripod which I would argue isn’t. I would go mad trying to position the camera if I had to use this for landscape work.
Tip 4 – Beware too Many Leg Sections
Some designs have 4 or more leg sections which extend to give the tripod its height. Remember the more leg sections the less stable the tripod is. Yes more sections make for a smaller tripod when carrying but you want a tripod to provide a solid base from which to shoot. I class these smaller tripods as travel tripods for infrequent use.
Tip 5 – What’s the maximum load
Good tripod manufacturers will publish maximum loads for their products. You need to ensure the load capacity of your tripod is at least 4-5kg. This may seem like overkill when your camera only weighs about a kilo but that extra load capacity will make all the difference when you are outside and the wind is blowing.
Tip 6 – A precision Head
I have a number of tripod heads but my favourite is the Pan and Tilt where I need to adjust each direction of movement separately. This may seem onerous at first but soon becomes second nature. I can quickly position this head securely and with precision. I also have a ball head which can be positioned in any angle but I find it less precise and difficult to use and lock securely in place. Take your time in choosing a head and ensure you find it easy to use when composing your shots.
Tip 7 – Quick Release Plates
A good head should have some form of quick release plate which attaches to the bottom of the camera. The plate then clips into the tripod head and can be released by pulling on a lever or pressing a button. This makes attaching and removing the camera quick and simple. If you have more than one camera, buy extra quick release plates and leave them attached the camera body.
Follow these tips when buying your tripod and you won’t be disappointed. Don’t waste your money buying inferior products as you will find yourself either not using them or worse still, throwing them away.
