Is It Worth Buying A Used Telescope?
Trying to find a telescope to buy is not always easy. It is not as if, every street has a store selling telescopes. Another option is buying a used telescope. However, is this such a great idea? Are there some things that you need to know, before buying used? In this article, you will discover is it worth buying a used telescope, and how to buy a telescope.
Telescopes are scientific instruments, though you can find cheap telescopes in toy stores, they may not offer you the best option. These telescopes are often flimsy, and easily breakable. And when used, they can be impractical.

2 big points are necessary, when thinking about buying a telescope. That is the mount and the optics. This applies, whether you are buying used or new. And it becomes more important, with used products.
With used telescopes, a point to first look at is the optics. This is important, because anything wrong with the optics will mean that you will get a lower quality image. In such a case, you may find that a smaller telescope performs better than a used telescope that has bad optics.
The second point is the mount. If the mount when buying used, has any damage, you may find that it is of no use. In this case, you will really need to consider just how much you are saving. Consider how much the telescope would cost new, and factor in the possibility of buying a new mount and tripod.
If it works out cost effective, and you still make a saving, then it may be a point to consider, and buy the used telescope. However, this depends on the optics.
Overall it may be a wise idea to buy new. Especially considering that a good telescope, that is new, could last you decades. It is well worth considering.

The Moon under superb seeing, also some shots of Venus and the scope set up (a Schmidt cassigrain 8 in celestron). The moon is shown on consecutive days to show how things can be seen when the lighting is good, and can quickly vanish when its not (the face on mars etc). The moon can be funny like this I find a sword which you will struggle to find on most high def moon maps, and an anchor which is somewhat easier. Atmospheric condition count for a lot with planetary and lunar obersvations. These were quite good nights. In all cases the camcorder was just put up to they eyepiece although for the second day its bolted on (makes things much more stable).

Not a povray animation, but it shows the interesting aspects of trying to image an extrasolar planet from the ground: Atmospheric turbulence is corrected by so-called adaptive optics on modern telescopes. The animation shows a “normal” observation on the left, seeing correctd by standard, contemporary AO systems in the center, and a correction as it is expected from the next generation of “extreme” AO systems. The top row shows the instantaneous image an astronomer would get to see through an eye-piece, in the bottom row a long-exposure image is integrated up to 10s. Embedded are a number of planets, in directions from the primary and at contrast ratios denoted by the yellow cross in the middle. After the image integration is finished, we can see how the actual contrast improved in the three cases first when a standard classical Lyot coronagraph is introduced, and then what happens when also “differential imaging” is pallied. In this particular case, I show spectral differential imaging (SDI), where images are taken at slightly different wavelengths, on at which the planets are bright, and one at which the planets are faint.

The basics of binoculars
You have to understand the basics of binoculars before buying one. This is the purpose of this article.
A binocular is actually two perfectly aligned telescopes and getting these two telescopes to work together as one instrument is a huge challenge for manufacturers. The physical features of binoculars which strike you first, are basic design, central focusing mechanism and diopter.
Basic design: There are two basic and conspicuously different types of designs. All binoculars either use “porro prisms” or “roof prisms”. The ones using porro prisms are the traditional design where the eye pieces are off-center to the barrels, whereas the ones using roof prisms the eye pieces are in line with the objective lenses and have a sleek design. Porro prism binoculars are less expensive and have greater three-dimensional viewing effect, whereas roof prism binoculars are more compact and lighter, but are usually more expensive.
Central focusing mechanism: The knob/wheel between the two optical barrels by means of which you change the focus when looking at an object. It could also be a toggle switch. The focus of “Auto focus” binoculars have been fixed at the factory, so they do not have a central focusing mechanism.
Diopter: This is a focus knob (usually at the right eyepiece) that lets you focus one side of the binoculars separately from the other, in order to set the binoculars to accommodate differences in the focusing of your two eyes. Some “auto focus” binoculars have a diopter for each eyepiece.
Technical features:
Magnification/power: A set of technical detail imprinted on any pair of binoculars could be something like this: 8×42, or 10×50. The first number (8, 10) is the magnification number, the “power” of the binoculars. The object is magnified by 8 or 10 times, which means that it appears to be 8 or 10 times closer than seen with the naked eye. Please note: The more powerful a binocular, the less bright the image – which will be a problem when focusing on something in the shade of a tree or in dim light in general. Moreover, the more powerful, the more difficult it becomes to focus on an object: Even the slightest hand movement is enhanced. Some binoculars do have image stabilization which electronically reduces movement for steadier viewing, but these are very expensive. A magnification of 8 xs is generally regarded as ideal for general, game and bird viewing.
Objective lens: The second number (42, 50) is the diameter of the objective lens (in millimeters), i.e. the two big lenses at the front of the two barrels. It is also called the “aperture” of the binocular. The bigger the aperture, the more light is captured, resulting in a clearer and brighter image, which is important when used in fading light.
Field of view (FOV): Another set of technical detail which is imprinted on the binoculars, could be something like this: 400 ft. at 1000 yds. This is the field of view, the width of the view at the particular distance. In this case 400 feet at 1000 yards. Could be designated in meters or in degree. Field-of-view is determined eyepiece design, but magnification does have an effect as well. For this reason even small pocket binoculars can have a reasonable FOV.
The exit pupil: The exit pupil can be seen by holding the binoculars at arm’s length and looking through the eyepieces. The pencil of light you see is the exit pupil. The actual diameter of the exit pupil is computed by dividing the diameter of the front objective lens (in millimeters) by the magnification of the binocular. So, in the case of a 7×35 binoculars, the diameter of the exit pupil is 5 millimeters. The relative brightness index (RBI) is an indication of image brightness. It is computed by squaring the exit pupil. So the RBI of our example is 25 (5×5=25). A RBI of 25 or greater is considered good for use in dim light.
Eye relief: For every pair of binoculars, there is an optimal distance between your eyes and the eyepieces, which is called eye relief. If your eyes are too close to or too far from the eyepieces, you can’t see the whole picture: part of it is blacked out. So, if you happen to wear eyeglasses, you have to make sure the eye relief is at least 15 mm. Except in the case of very expensive binoculars, field of view and eye relief work against one another. If the manufacturer increases the one, it is at the cost of the other.
Coating of lenses:The lenses of all binoculars should be made from Bk-4 glass and are coated with anti-reflective coating, which is applied to enhance the quality of the image. Make sure you choose a “fully multi-coated” pair of binoculars. In the case of roof prism binoculars the lenses also have to be coated with “phase correcting” coatings.
Waterproofing: A waterproof model will not only be less likely to fog up internally, it will also be better sealed against dust and dirt. Make sure the binoculars are “nitrogen purged/filled”.
Close focus: Focusing at a distance is no problem for any pair of binoculars; focusing at close range, however, is a totally different matter. For watching birds or butterflies you will have to look for a pair with a close focus range of less than 4 meters. Compact binoculars excel in close focus, some even as close as 1 meter.
The focus speed: If you need the binoculars for watching wild animals, in particular birds, the speed of focus is important. While following a bird in flight, you need to change the focus all the time and if your binoculars do not allow for quick adjustment, you will struggle all the way.

In today’s world many projects are run as complex programs that may take 3 to 5 years to complete. For example, within corporations the customization, integration, and implementation of a complex software solution (like Customer Relationship Management, or Enterprise Resource Planning), or a journey to an Adaptive Enterprise. As a result, the benefits may not be fully understood or realized until later into the program, and these are very difficult to visualize early on. But a historical analogy demonstrates not only the end-state of the solution but the journey to it.
Case Analysis 1:
Charles Babbage Engines (Year 1822-42) Project
This could be considered a project failure because the prototype was never finished.
In 1822 he built a mechanical calculator difference engine for creating tables for banking and insurance, navigation, engineering.
In 1832 he designed first analytical engine with punched cards (data storage), mechanical calculator; the first programmable computer.
In 1842 the government gave up on the project and stopped funding it.
He went to his grave a bitter man.
Before 1991 the view was that engineering standards of the time were too low to build the engine.
The 1991 reconstruction project successfully completed Difference Engine No 2.
The reconstructed engine worked as intended proving he was not an eccentric and his plans could be fulfilled.
Conclusions about the project:
His failure was not due to engineering imprecision.
Being a perfectionist he in sourced everything, didn’t work to plan and lacked project management skills.
He had fought with his chief engineer over project control.
His lacked the skill to influence political/scientific figures, whose support was key to his success. Public relations and diplomacy were not his strong points.
Lesson is brilliant technology needs talented communicators to market it to fulfill its potential. Hi-tech wizardry isn’t enough.
Case Analysis 2:
Herman Hollerith Computer ( Year 1890) Project
This could be considered a project success because the prototype was ready for the 1890 census and put into production.
In 1879 he was hired at the U.S. Census Office and began working on mechanization of census.
He leveraged Jacquard loom punch card technology.
In 1884 he filed with Patent Office
He developed an electrical tabulator and sorter that used punch cards to process the 1890 census.
Census delivered in half the time and rechecked result.
In 1896 he founded Tabulating Machine Company the forerunner to IBM.
Conclusions about the project:
He worked towards a problem he was completely familiar with and knew the scope of.
He closely defined the extent of the problem and the required solution. This made his objectives very clear.
He leveraged existing and proven technologies were he could.
He double checked the census to prove the accuracy of the technology.
Every government in the world with census requirements wanted the technology.
He was able to effectively market, build, and sell the technology around the world.
Case Analysis 3:
String fellow (Year 1848) Project
This could be considered a project failure. Although initial results were very promising the project was not continued beyond a prototype. John Stringfellow was an engineer with amazing skill at making steam engines. He had a lifelong obsession with flight. He discovered that it took a rook one foot of wing span to lift half a pound of weight at twenty miles per hour to hold it in the air. With this knowledge it was not long before he had constructed a light weight steam engine to rotate a propeller which could be slung underneath an aeroframe. The wingspan was 10 feet, spars were of wood, and fabric of silk. The steam engine and boiler, with paper-thin copper walls, were in a gondola below the fuselage, a total weight of 9lbs. Two huge propellers rotated in opposite directions to give lateral stability and with no vertical fin, and it would veer at the slightest disturbance.
He flew it inside a lace mills, where the air was still. The narrow space had little room; so he launched the aircraft along a wire for ten yards. This ensured that the machine started flying in the right direction, and right speed. Later he demonstrated it was possible to fly a distance of about 40 yards. However, challenges were beyond the limits of the emerging technology of the day (specifically engine power and weight).
Conclusions about the project:
John Stringfellow did not take his prototype to production and failed. A great idea but ahead of its time by about 50 years.
Case Analysis 4:
Wright Brothers (Year 1903) Project
This could be considered a project success because the prototype flew a sustained and controlled powered flight for 12 seconds. They systematically broke the problem down into its 3 major components of takeoff, propulsion and control, and resolved each of these. They constructed everything from wings to propeller.
The Wright brothers were bicycle manufacturers used to working with unstable machines and this gave them an advantage over all the other inventors in the race. They carefully managed all the critical paths of project and completed testing. Fearing their rival inventors no public flights between 1903 and 1908 were made as they awaited the patent.
Conclusions about the project:
The Wright brothers were great project managers carefully managing the project to ensure ultimate success, and biding their time.
Case Analysis 5:
Roald Amundsen’s Project
This could be considered a project success, as he won the race by reaching the South Pole 1 month ahead of Scott. Amundsen told his men his plans in Madeira. He was confident that skis and dogs used in the Arctic experience were suitable for the Antarctic. He landed further along the Ross Ice Shelf and risked setting up base camp on the ice. He laid supply depots Southwards using expertly trained dog teams, much further South than Scott’s. He anticipated there were alternative routes to the Polar Plateau. He handpicked 4 men (skiing champion and two expert dog-drivers) and left with 50 dogs on 20 October 1911. Progressed was swift as he moved with the dogs up the newly discovered Axel Heiberg Glacier and across the Polar Plateau. On 14 December 1911 he reached the Pole.
The main reasons for the project success were:
He planned brilliant, avoided unnecessary leaks, and managed public expectations by not disclosing plans.
He stayed with proven and tested transportation technology in skis and dogs, and refined these.
He took calculated risks setting up base camp on the ice based on experience and cut the journey down.
He anticipated alternatives and made the best use of these.
He handpicked a well balanced team of individual skills to support the technology.
He relied on his experience to carry the project through.
He carefully managed all the critical paths of project and completed testing.
He was a great project manager and carefully managing the project to ensure ultimate success.
Case Analysis 6:
US Space Program (Year 1960):
A good historical example of this is the U.S. Space Program of the 1960′s which was a series of evolutionary projects within a complex program that lasted close to a decade. When President Kennedy set the program objective in 1963 there was no clear mental picture of how this would be done, and what it would look like. The vision would have to be evolved step by step. After the initial objective of putting a “man on the moon” was achieved in 1969 the U.S. space program found itself it rapid decline as public interest waned, and funding dried up. There were several factors but a significant one was the lack of a clear next step, or mission. Hence, the importance of setting a vision, and evolving it as the program progresses and lessons are learned.
Today the spin offs of the U.S. Space Program are well recognized having driven several technological revolutions like that in microelectronics, and material sciences. With better foresight and project management the U.S. Space Program could have continued at the same pace of the 1960′s into the 1970′s and acted as a catalyst for creating emerging technologies.
Similarly, in today’s business world complexities abound:

The right lighting system combined with a camera that offers a fast shutter speed can literally stop a bullet in mid-air. Well, it looks stopped when you see the picture. No, I’m not suggesting that you shoot the lights and watch them explode on impact. I’m referring to capturing the rotating bullet as an image. Studio strobes can be extremely powerful and can stop all sorts of motion without risk of blurred images.
If you plan to convert a spare bedroom, basement, or attic into a studio, you should give serious consideration to buying some studio strobes. This type of lighting is not cheap, but you can get name-brand lights that do a wonderful job for reasonable prices.
My studio lights are made by Novatron®, and I’m very happy with them. This company is known for its excellence in lighting equipment for both serious amateurs and professionals. It is common to find kits offered by Novatron and other quality manufacturers that will give you all the basics of good studio lighting. For less than 0, you can frequently find kits that include at least two flash heads, sometimes three, light stands, umbrellas, a carrying case, and other accessories. Anyone with an interest in studio photography can benefit from these semi-pro lighting kits. If you decide to use this type of lighting, invest in a good light meter that takes flash readings. Otherwise, you will suffer trial-and-error exposure ratings that will be very frustrating. Another option is to use the automatic mode on your camera and depend on the camera’s light meter.
Quartz
Quartz-halogen lights are an alternative to flash heads for studio photography. Problems occur with flash photography. One of the most common is finding out after you look at pictures taken that the flash units created unwanted shadows. This doesn’t happen with quartz-halogen lights. These lights are on while you are composing a picture, so you see the exact effect the lighting has on your subject. This is a big advantage for a lot of photographers. An added bonus to this type of lighting is that it’s less expensive than flash units. A good quartz-halogen starter get will cost you about 0. It will include the lights, barndoors (which allow you to angle the lighting), light stands, and a carrying case.
(CAUTION) Quartz-halogen and other photo lamps get extremely hot during use. They can easily inflict serious burns and are capable of starting fires if they come into contact with flammable materials.
I started my studio lighting with quartz-halogen lights and continue to use the same lights today. My flash heads see a lot of use, but so do my steady lights. Both types of lighting have their advantages and disadvantages. One drawback to quartz lights is that they get very hot. This can make a model’s make-up run, present a fire hazard if flammable materials come into contract with them, and there is some risk of serious burns if someone touches the lights.
Another problem with quartz lighting is that it can’t stop motion like a flash unit can. Since quartz lighting produces tungsten lighting, you will have to put a corrective filter on your lens to maintain accurate colors in color photographing. But, this is no big deal. Of course, you can made lighting corrections in your photo editing program in your computer.
Quartz lights allow you to take normal light readings. This can be done with an independent light meter or the one that is in your camera. A flash meter is not required. Since quartz lights are on at all times, you can see shadows and lighting effects before you fire the shutter. This is a big help. If you want big-time lighting on a limited budget, quartz-halogen lights are the way to go.
Ring Lights
Ring lights are a specialty flash. They are used with macro lenses when taking close-up pictures. These units often consist of a sensor that mounts in the hot shoe of a camera, a battery pack, and the flash attachment. The flash mounts on the ring of a lens, in a way similar to a filter. Since the flash elements surround the lens, it gives good, even illumination of your subject. Some models, like the one I have, allow you to disable one-half of the ring for creative photography. Other models fire all at one time. For documentary photography of close-ups, ring lights can’t be beaten.
A ring light would not normally be used for anything other than documentary work. Taking a picture of a human model with a ring light used for flash would result in a bright, well-lit photograph that would probably be boring. Ring lights bring out extensive detail in subjects. This is usually not desirable when photographing people or pets. If you don’t chase after grasshoppers, mushrooms, and wildflowers, you shouldn’t need a ring light. But, if you love to bring nature home on your memory card with you in a film canister, a ring light might be right for you.
Flash In a Box
Some photographers like to take their flash shows on the road. If you are one of these road warriors, look into portable studio flashes that can travel with you. Any studio lighting can be used where electricity is available, but if your take your photos off the beaten track, you may want some battery-powered flashes to go along with you. There are two ways to do this. One is much more expensive than the other.
If you want to take full-power studio strobes out into a meadow to photograph a model, be prepared to spend between ,000 and ,500 for the privilege. You might find a portable, battery-powered location kit for less than ,000, but they are not numerous. It might be cheaper to take your regular studio lights and rent a small electric generator for your location session. For that matter, it might even be cheaper to buy a small generator to run your AC lights. It’s very difficult to justify or afford location strobes. But, don’t get discouraged; I’m going to show you how to beat the system.
Most photography doesn’t require super-powerful studio strobes. If you want to take models on location and get some great shots, you can do it with inexpensive, portable, battery-powered flash units. I’m talking about the same electronic flashes that you might normally mount on your camera. These flashes when put together with either sync cords or slaves and some light stands make a good substitute for expensive location kits. You can still use umbrellas and reflection cards, and you will save a tremendous amount of money. Granted, you won’t have the full power and control you would with a location set, but you probably won’t need it.
To give you an idea of the results you can receive with inexpensive, pocket-size flash equipment, let me share a story from my past with you. When I started doing wedding photography, I couldn’t afford the best equipment, but I needed my work to look good. My second wedding assignment was a tough one.
I was going to have to light a large dance room with electronic flash to meet the demands of my customer. This would have been a good time to own a location set of strobes, but I didn’t. To compensate for my problem, I took several modest flashes, some inflatable umbrellas, and some light stands to the reception area. My assistant and I positioned the lights prior to the crowded arrival of guests. Each electronic flash was equipped with a peanut slave. When I fired my powerful, bracket-mounted camera flash, all of the slaves would trigger the other flashes. This simple, inexpensive set-up allowed me full light coverage of a large room and crowd with minimal cost.
I have never owned a location set of strobes. During all of my years in the field, I’ve always used simple, battery-powered flashes with good results. You can spend a lot of money on flashy pro gear if you want to, but it’s rarely needed.
Other Flash Factors
There are a number of accessories available for photographers who use flash equipment. Whether you’re using a pocket flash or a ,000 pro setup, you can always enhance your flash photography with accessories. Buying stuff is half of what makes photography so much fun! The accessories available are not mandatory equipment, but many of them can improve your photography and produce nice special effects. You will need a camera with either a hot shoe or a pc sync connection port.
Many photographers advance to a point where they want remote and or multiple flash sources. If you reach this level, you will likely use a sync cord for your remote flash. Slave devices can be used to trigger multiple flashes. There is one problem often encountered with sync cords. They don’t always maintain good connections with the camera body.
You can reduce flash failures by using a sync key, a small device that resizes the connection pieces, to keep your connections tight. This is a very inexpensive accessory that should be kept in your camera bag or vest at all times when doing flash photography.
Slaves come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Peanut slaves are inexpensive and work well under most conditions. This is the type of slave that I use, and I can recommend them highly. Most slave devices are made like a hot shoe. The ones that are not can be coupled with a remote flash by using a sync cord. The cord runs only from the slave to the flash, not from your camera body to the remote devices. Once you get to the point of doing creative things with artificial lighting, you will want multiple flashes and remote firing devices.
Studio strobes of good quality usually have slaves built into them. When you fire one light, they all go off. Before you invest in any studio strobes, make sure that they have adjustable power settings and built-in slaves. When this is the case, you only have to connect one light to your camera body with a sync cord, which is also known as a PC cord.
Filters
Filters are available for most photographic lights and flashes. Using filters with your lighting can produce some outstanding results. Even inexpensive pocket flashes are often sold with an assortment of colored filters. Some models use gel-type filters and others use plastic filters. It is a good idea to make sure that any lighting units you buy will accept filters for future interests in special effects.
Snoots
Snoots and barndoors sound like things you would find down on the farm, but they are accessories for photography lighting. Any reputable studio light will accept these types of accessories.
Barndoors consist of two or four metal flaps that allow you to angle light creatively. Snoots are used to concentrate a beam of light. They are often used to highlight a model’s hair. There are many other types of add-ons available for studio lighting, so make sure the products you are considering will accept them.
Umbrellas
Most people have seen umbrellas used in flash-photography sessions. They are used to bounce light in a soft, shadowless, attractive manner. Most photographers use white umbrellas, but silver umbrellas produce more bounce. You should experiment with both types until you are comfortable with which one to use on various assignments. As good as umbrellas are, the can be cumbersome at times, and they don’t allow a lot of mobility. There is a solution to this dilemma.
Inflatable umbrellas are the answer to higher mobility and better results when using small flash units. These little blow-up umbrellas are only several inches in diameter, but they produce great results. They attach to an electronic flash with elastic bands. Your flash fires into the clear surface of the device and is reflected by the white or silver interior surface. You get bounced lighting from a small, portable, affordable package. I’ve used them to photograph modeling sessions and weddings with wonderful results. This is one accessory any serious flash photographer should own.
Reflector Cards
Reflector cards are often used in photography. They are implemented with natural light and flash photography. A reflector card can be a small, hand-held size, or it can be a large unit that is supported by a stand. The painted walls and ceilings of buildings act as large reflector cards for photographers bouncing flashes. By bouncing flash or natural light with reflector cards, you receive lighting that is not harsh and distasteful.
Lightweight survival blankets fold to pocket-size proportions and are often silver on one side. These inexpensive items make fantastic reflectors.
Meters
Light meters are critical to good photography. Most modern cameras have some type on built-in meter, but these meters can be fooled under certain conditions. The use of multiple flash units is one of these conditions. If you are going to do much flash photography with any type of flash other than a dedicated, automatic, on-camera flash, invest in a decent flash meter. You will save time, frustration, and wasted film many times over. A lot of flash meters double as reflective meters, so that you are getting two meters for the price of one. This is the type that I would recommend. Flash photography and studio lighting can add a new dimension to your hobby, so give it serious consideration. You should enjoy the journey.

When we take a photograph, lines that appeared straight enough while looking through the lens seem tilted and curved when we look at the actual photograph. To straighten these lines in Photoshop, in this case a tilted, curved horizon, click on “Filter”, “Distort”, and “Lens Correction”. The “Lens Correction” window appears with a variety of tools for helping you correct for aberrations introduced by you or your lens. Make sure that “Preview” is selected, or you will not be able to see the effect of the various tools on your photo. I keep “Show Grid” selected, as the lines really help to determine what needs fixing and by how much. If the grid blends in too much with areas of your image, you can change the colour with the “Color:” selector. The first thing I like to fix is the angle. Camera Lens Filters – Getting Started
If you are just getting started in SLR photography, the thought of all the ancillary items you need can be mind-boggling. Between lenses, cases, battery packs and hot shoes, it’s no wonder most people enroll in a course or get a how-to book to figure out the basics. One item that almost all professionals carry with them and is relatively inexpensive is a series of lens filters. Lens filters improve the contrast, sharpness, color and intensity of the captured image. There are also special effect lenses that allow the photographer unprecedented control over the image at the point of capture.
Many of the more common lens filters such as UV/haze, polarizing, neutral density, and warming/cooling or color filters are key to capturing the correct image in a variety of lighting conditions. Knowing when to use them is the real trick and something that comes with time and experience.
UV filters have a primary purpose of reducing UV light from entering the lens, but because they are so common and inexpensive, as well as their small impact on the lighting of a picture people opt to use them as safety lens filters. Safety filters are primarily designed to protect the expensive lens from scratches and damage, because you would much rather replace a lens filter than a 0 lens.
Polarizing lenses only allow the light to enter from a particular direction which reduces the amount of available light but increases the saturation of the image as a result. They are especially effective when used on landscape scenery to remove glare from water and increase contrast of natural settings.
Neutral density filters reduce the overall light such that aperture may increased in very bright light settings, which makes a reduced depth of field possible. Uses include capturing of water objects like rivers such that the water looks smoother and ND filters also provide some level of blurring for objects in motion. Sharpness is typically increased with these filters as well which is especially useful when capturing stones under river beds.
There are also many graduated filters available which provide varying levels of image opacity. These filters would be used such that in highly lit scenes you could select a transparent-to-opaque look by adjusting the filter.
Colored filters provide an overall color shift for the image and can often result in an artistic look that can not be replicated as easily in post-production settings. By filtering the light at the source there are benefits to the midrange colors over traditional leveling techniques. White balances can also be adjusted using a specialized filter to adapt to the current scene requirements.
The result of using any particular filter on the end photograph will be as varied as the styles of the photographers taking the photos. Selecting the right filter is as individualistic and dependent on conditions as framing the shot correctly. Knowledge of the correct filters to use to achieve a particular look is something that comes with experience, so buy lens filters and start practicing!

A very smartly packaged pair of binoculars. The armouring feels excellent, ergonomically they sit well in the hand with a non-slip finish. They are light for a 10×50. Really good generous eye relief twist out caps. Fantastic pair of binoculars for hunters, birders, bush craft and military. They come in Coyote brown finish and come without rectical, or with a choice of two tactical rectical types, either a mil dot system for military use or with a tactical milling rectical (TMR) rectical for long distance shooting. The TMR rectical is finer than the mil dot which allows for not obscuring and ranging long distance targets. The binoculars are 100% waterproof, nitrogen filled, fog proof, multi coated optics for non-reflective viewing. They come with one of the best binocular cases that we have seen, it is padded, compact, light, and lots of molle attachments for mounting, also in Coyote brown. Things we are not so keen on: Definitely the front lens caps. These are terrible and fall off regularly. For a military spec binocular these caps should be spot on for protection from sand and dust, they should be just like the rest of the product; The fixing for the leash are also in plastic and again for such a high spec product these should be in steel to ensure security when carrying. Just two small, but very important items. This scores five stars by us, even taking the rubbish lens caps into consideration.

Capture Far Off Views With Camera Binoculars
As any binocular enthusiast knows, there are all kinds of binoculars to fit just about every need out there. There are waterproof binoculars for aquatic sports and hobbies, night vision binoculars for hunting or observing nocturnal wildlife, compact binoculars for travel, and tons of other types in between. One of the newest types of binoculars available are camera binoculars.
Digital camera binoculars are a fairly new addition to the binocular market, but are gaining in popularity. They combine the ability to see objects at a distance with the ability to capture them digitally, so you can capture exciting moments and share them with friends and family via e-mail or photo sharing sites like Flickr, or include them on your own Web site.
Camera binoculars work much the same way regular digital cameras do. Depending on the model you choose, camera binoculars can offer from one to four megapixels. The more megapixels, the better the photo resolution. Like digital cameras, some camera binoculars have liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, so you don’t have to actually look through the binoculars to see what you’re photographing. The LCD screen allows you to easily focus and center the image you want to photograph.
Most camera binoculars have a magnification of 7x to 10x, which is good for general viewing. Some even offer the ability to record video in addition to still photos. Whether they’re set up for photos or video or both, camera binoculars will come with a cable that allows you to connect the optics to your computer to retrieve all the images you record with them.
Some camera binocular models have a slot for a memory card, making the transfer of data even easier and more convenient. Most also include about 16MB of internal memory, so if you forget the memory card, you can still get a few photos if the need arises. As with a digital camera, it’s a good idea to carry extra memory cards with you. When you’re out on the trail, or at a concert or other event, you want to make sure you have enough space to store all the photos you want. The worst thing is to have to delete photos to make room for new ones. Don’t get caught in that situation. Memory cards aren’t that expensive, and you can store them in the binocular case.
Speaking of cases, it’s a good idea to have one for any pair of binoculars, but especially for camera binoculars. They have more electronics and mechanisms than standard binoculars, which could be damaged if the binoculars fall or are bumped with other objects when they’re stored. Binocular cases will protect your investment, and ensure your optics last for many years to come.
If you really want to go all out and combine binoculars with digital camera technology, there are some high end models out there that offer the best of both worlds. Some camera binocular models offer a keypad specifically for controlling the camera. It gives you more control over the photos you take, and the quality of the images. They may also include auto focus, which is great for wildlife viewing and photographing. When an animal appears in your view, you may not have time to focus and get everything just right to snap the picture before the animal disappears again. Depending on how you intend to use your camera binoculars, it may be worth paying a little more for more features and easier use.
