This is a video review and comparison shots of the Canon WD-H43 Wideangle lens, specifically designed for the Canon HV Series (Hv20, Hv30, Hv40) I made it because i didnt see any video reviews or comparisons on the internet so i trusted my gut and bought one hoping it will be good. Im very pleased with it! It looks great on my Hv30, and i use it all the time. I did not mention it but even when you zoom in, the image quality with the lens still attached is still the same, no quality loss. To all you skateboarding filmer kids, dont get this for skateboarding. It is not a fisheye, but a wide angle lens. In most skateboarding vids, people use fisheyes, and many people get tricked into thinking a fisheye and a wide angle are the same.A wide angle is much less wider then a fisheye! Don’t be fooled! I use it for short films to get more width then the built in lens. My fisheye is too wide and wouldn’t look good at all in a short film.

Gear! Photographers Love It
Photographers love it and of course they need it, at least most of the time. It seems that every time I am around new photographers, or interested doctors, lawyers or businessmen for that matter, there is always that one inevitable question: what do you shoot with? So, what do I shoot with? What lenses do I use? Do I only shoot available light, or do I use flash? The answer: yes.
Just kidding. So for those that are curious, I will break down my typical setup for a wedding, and why I own each piece. There is quite a bit of gear, but don’t worry, we will get through this, even if it takes more than one blog posting. I have spent years building my photography equipment, and will keep adding to it for the rest of my life (just don’t tell my wife that!), and you can too! So let’s get to it.
First off are the camera bodies. I shoot all digital SLRs, which stands for single-lens reflex. Essentially, these are the cameras that accept interchangeable lenses, which, among other reasons, makes them vastly superior to point and shoots. Note* I do love my Canon G9, great when I want to travel light. I shoot all Canon equipment, and love my gear. Nikon is an excellent brand as well, and I don’t call them mean or silly names, just so we can move right past that whole Ford versus Chevy thing. I always take three cameras to my weddings; a Canon 5D Mark II, which makes gorgeous high resolution files; a Canon 1D Mark IIN, which is great for fast/low light focusing and high speed; and finally a reliable Canon 20D that functions as a stationary ceremony camera, extra cam for an assistant or as a triple backup camera. I would recommend that you always carry at least two high-quality machines with you, because you never know what will happen. If you can’t shoot the rest of the wedding due to equipment malfunction, you will have one incredibly unhappy couple, not to mention the parents that footed the bill. So just be smart, you can even rent cameras if you need to.
Next, I would like to give a quick run-down on other items in my bag, especially my lenses. Before we get in too deep, please keep something in mind: if you buy a really nice camera body, then buy cheap glass (lenses), you are not going to get the best quality. Remember, it doesn’t matter how nice the body is if what you are seeing through is not well made. The same goes for the UV Haze filter that you bought, or will buy, to go on the front. Don’t go for the bargain basement brand, as they go a long way in keeping the front glass on your lens nice and happy.
Here are the lenses I typically use during a wedding: The Canon 16-35mm f2.8 wide-angle lens; the Canon 50mm f1.4 lens, and the Canon 70-700 f2.8 IS telephoto lens. Also, I love shooting the Canon 85mm f1.2 lens; it is a very sweet (and very expensive) lens that I rent from time to time. Let me tell you, it makes for amazing portrait and detail images. As you look at this list you may have noticed that all the lenses I mention are Canon. Remember that whichever brand camera you have, use the corresponding lenses (kit lenses typically aren’t so good though), as they are engineered specifically for your camera, and the optics will be of better quality than third party gear. If you have a question about your particular lens, please feel free to ask. Now, on to why I use all of those lenses.
16-35mm f2.8: This is a beautiful wide-angle lens, and perfect for catching wide scenes, emotional moments before the wedding and reception action. I shoot with a documentary style, so this also lens allows me to layer elements in the photo, even in tight spaces.
50mm f1.4: Great portrait lens, especially when you open it up to f1.8, really nice and sharp. I don’t recommend going to f1.4 with it, as it is nearly impossible to get anything sharp at that aperture (f-stop). This is also a good general-use lens, and does well for getting nice details such as the flowers and decorations, while throwing the background out of focus for a magazine-style look.
70-200mm f2.8: This lens is an absolute must-have for anyone that does portraits, or owns a camera. Seriously. I have shot everything from football to racing to bridal portraits with this lens, and it handles all of them with ease. Also, in case you are interested, Canon is about to release an updated version of it, which should have some nice improvements. This lens functions very well for portraiture, and can also be handy for ceremony coverage when you can’t get close to the bride and groom. There is an f2.8 version and an f4 version. The 2.8 is heavier and more expensive but allows you to shoot in lower light, which makes it the one to get in my opinion. I have a Canon 1.4x teleconverter that I will place on there sometimes to get even more reach. In case you are wondering, a teleconverter is basically an accessory you couple to your lens that magnifies your lens, 1.4 times. They have a 2x as well, but they don’t work well. Using a teleconverter can be very handy, but keep in mind that it takes more light to make an image, which can put you at a disadvantage if you are somewhere very dark. This is becoming less of an issue now though, as cameras are able to perform more and more in near-pitch black areas.
85mm f1.2: I love this lens. It will most likely be the next lens I purchase, as it does amazing things on portrait shoots. I also love shooting details with it, and use one almost every time I am shooting fashion editorial. It throws the background out of focus so beautifully, or some would say it has a nice bokeh (cool photo nerd word). Great lens.

Macro Lens – Should be used when you need to take a photo of a ladybug on a flower. The macro lens will help you take extreme close ups. The quality is very high and a photo can be taken from a fair distance that will not scare away shy subjects.
Fisheye – These lenses are always fun and exciting to use. They use a view of 180 degrees and create a distortion of reality. When shooting a landscape, it will have a distinct curve to it. When shooting a person, it will seem as if you’re looking through a peephole.
What is a Teleconverter? It is basically a secondary lens which can be mounted between your camera and the lens. What does it do? It increases your lens’s focal length. So why buy a bigger lens and not a converter? Because of quality. A teleconverter will make focusing harder and the optical quality of your lens will also be lower. Long Lenses For Photography and Photographers
Long lenses
Telephoto lens settings allow you to fill the frame with distant subjects. But the ideal maximum focal length to take with you will depend on your holiday plans
The main purpose of telephoto lens settings is that they allow you to get ‘closer’ to a subject without having to move your feet, magnifying the image in comparison with shorter lenses. They are essential in situations where it is impossible or unwise to move within a certain distance of the subject. But whilst the use of long telephotos with sport and wildlife subjects is usually essential, most subjects will occasionally benefit from the use of a more extensive zoom.
A short telephoto lens (with a focal length 70mm to 135mm, say) is often the best lens for close-up portraits, as it tends to flatten the features in a flattering way. Longer settings (from 200mm to 300mm) can be useful for candid shots – letting you capture shots of local people, or of family and friends, without their becoming camera conscious.
Even with subjects such as architecture and landscape, where the wide-angle is often the lens of choice, a long telephoto will not only allow the photographer to pick out details and individual elements in the scene, it will allow him or her to tackle these subjects in a refreshing way. The way in which a telephoto lens can seem to compress elements in the composition, or throw backgrounds so convincingly out of focus, can often be more beneficial than its narrow angle of view
The exact length of lens required will depend on the subjects you find at your destination. The further away you are, and the smaller your subject, the longer the lens you will need. On a safari you will benefit from the magnification of a 400mm, whilst shooting surfers from the beach you may need an 800mm. Such extreme focal lengths are not often found on zooms, requiring you to buy a bulky additional lens (or use a teleconverter). Choosing a Digital Point and Shoot Camera ? What matters Most!

This is not the usual camera test report, which ends up with a list of camera recommendations to buy. Rather, I would like to give you camera advice and the tools you need to choose your next digital camera today and in five years from now. Let’s face it, there are hundreds of different cameras to choose from and the manufacturers release new models every month. To make matters worse, most retailers stock different models, which makes price comparison almost impossible.
When it comes to choosing a new digital camera, you want to have knowledge on this subject, which can be applied as a foundation, before you start choosing brands and models.

Choose the type of camera first!
It happens all the time – I see it almost every day. People come and see me with faulty point and shoot digital cameras, which have self induced faults. The good news is, that most of these expensive problems could have been avoided, when you had chosen the right camera type, which fits your lifestyle, and had taken the right precautions of course. The bad news is, these faults are not covered under warranty and are often uneconomical to repair!
What is a self induced fault? Sand -, liquid- and shock damage
Sand damage can easily happen at the beach without realising it straight away. A couple of sand grains in the right spot can malfunction an extendable lens mechanism.
The most common liquid damaged cameras we have seen are affected by rainwater, beach and swimming pool and believe it or not, drink bottles stored in the camera bag.
Shock damage is a tricky subject, in particular when the camera is handled by multiple users. Often it is not realised, as there are hardly any signs of damage on the outside housing of the camera, but the damage is done inside.
What is an uneconomical repair?
The most common symptoms, or let us say parts, which brake, are LCD displays and extendable lenses. LCD’s are made of glass and exposed often without any protection. Lenses are in most cases none serviceable items and need to be replaced as a whole unit, which is extremely expensive. Spare part prices can make up to 50% and more of the price you payed, when the camera was new! Given the price decline and the improved performance of new cameras, you can work out by yourself, were you want to spend your money.
What to look out for when choosing your new camera?
To get the most out of your investment, choose the type which suits your lifestyle best. Let’s put the earlier paragraph about self induced faults into consideration and assume we distinguish between 3 types of point and shoot cameras. Cameras with…

If you have a personal preference for a camera with an extendable lens, you must take special care of it, to avoid any damage to the lens.
In case you have kids and multiple users, who might be a little rough with the handling of the camera, the best return on the investment is given with a water and shockproof camera. Personally I use a camera with an inbuilt lens, which hasn’t given me any problems whatsoever.
Accessories
Do you want to upgrade your camera with a newer model of the same brand and hoping to use your old accessories like battery or memory card? In most cases you can’t. Different physical shapes and electrical specifications make it impossible.
Features
Now, we are talking purchase price. More megapixels and optical zoom is not all! Often specifications are pushed to the limit and performance is sacrificed. Let me explain: to take a good shot with a high megapixel and let’s say 10x optical zoom camera without tripod requires a lot computer power. Often it can take a few seconds of shutter lag and the results are still not satisfying. What I am saying is, to have a good performance/specification camera you have to pay the price and go for a semi-professional or DSLR camera. However, the most shots indoors are taken in wide-angle lens setting and outdoors you use the same, most cameras handle these shots without any issues.
The best insurance from disappointments is to test the camera by yourself under different light conditions and zoom settings.

Make sure, the cameras tested are readily available and the test topics make sense and are relevant for you. See it as a guideline only.
What is a good brand?
This is hard to say from a repairer’s point of view, we only see the faulty ones. When looking underneath the brand badge and housing, it is almost impossible to see if a ‘brand name’ stands out with better workmanship. All I can see is, that mechanical components seemed to be done more out of plastics and the way they have been put together looks and feels cheaper as it used to. All the improvements, which lead to better specifications, go into more powerful electronics and computer chips. Therefore manufacturer costs can be reduced to a minimum. Today, it is not as expensive as it used to be to manufacture a relative good new camera or release new models, which explains the ever increasing flood of new cameras.
What the reliability of the different brands concerns, I couldn’t recommend one or the other, as long as you compare cameras in the same price bracket. A lot of spare parts have Chinese writing on the boxes, which makes me wonder, where there are coming from and where the cameras are manufactured.
